Good Fences - Back To Kincer's

Webster Road . Blue Ridge . Botetourt County

Remember Kincer's Grocery sign from LAST WEEK? Well Monday I had to run a few errands and I took Webster Road planning to get a picture of the "grocery store" building but there was so much snow on the side of the road and that building sits much closer to the road so hard to get a picture. This little house is somehow associated with the little grocery store...I saw it documented somewhere. I like the little gate in front. Soon I'll get a picture of the actual store...you can kind of see it to the right of the house, like they are connected.

P.S. Our snow is melting quickly...warm days but icy cold nights are making everything that melted freeze again. School was back in session on Wednesday but with a 2 hour delay and another 2 hour delay for Thursday. Supposed to be almost 60 on Sunday...now that I've had my snow fix I am ready for spring! Too soon? ;)

Through My Lens - #JonasBlizzard

Well the storm came and went. It started snowing before we woke up Friday morning and snowed and snowed till early Saturday. I think we ended up with about 15 inches or so...not nearly as bad as they were predicting...thank goodness we never lost power! These pictures were taken around my backyard on Sunday, which was beautiful and sunny, and warm(ish)!
Peeking down the hill at the man who lives behind us...see him shoveling? You can also spy a little kid out playing...

What's Ozzy looking at?

It's his little friends next door...see them? I think they were tied to the porch so they wouldn't disappear in the snow! (Don't worry, they are indoor dogs, same as Ozzy!)

School was cancelled on Friday of course and they've already cancelled for Monday. Our road looks fine but the county I live in, Botetourt County, is mostly rural so there are a lot of those backroads that take time to get cleared. Bless the snowplow drivers!

Kincer's Grocery

Webster Road

"The ca. 1930 Kincer Store in Webster on the former Salem and Lynchburg Turnpike
served the local community as well as employees of Webster Brick Company, now General
Shale Brick. The store is associated with an adjacent dwelling and is also located in front of the
N&W Railway tracks. The store has had several additions and is vacant; after the original owner
passed away, the new owner
was unable to continue its
operation because zoning
does not allow a commercial
operation so close to the
road."

Mount Moriah Historic Cemetery

Yesterday I showed you the church, now let's take a walk down to the cemetery...

Follow along this old trace road. It is believed that this road predates the Civil War.

There were a few of these hand made wooden crosses placed on the graves...

This cemetery was originally a slave burial site. Many of the graves are unmarked now and are only identified by their shallow depressions left in the ground.

Through My Lens - Mount Moriah Baptist Church

Mount Moriah Baptist Church . 3521 East Orange Avenue . Roanoke . 24012

I thought today, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, would be a good time to show you this historical little church. Yesterday the boys and I took a short ride to go see it. It was FREEZING cold!

This little church was built in 1908 but was one of the earliest congregations for African Americans with origins as a Sunday School for slaves back in the mid 1800's.

Right Here is quite a bit of interesting info about the church on the National Historic Registration form.

While I was looking around for more info I also sadly found that this sweet little church has been vandalized quite a few times :(

Tomorrow I will show you the cemetery.

This is pretty much right across the street from yesterday's post. Fairly new, we haven't eaten here yet but it has gotten great reviews. Must try! The James River runs behind it.

Well I liked this old building because of the chippy paint and upon investigating I have learned that this was originally the Kemble Building, then in the early 20th century served as the Buchanan Colored Odd Fellows Lodge. Not knowing what an Odd Fellow Lodge was, I found THIS. I think this building has had an interesting life!
