Along a trail at Booker T National Monument in Franklin County

Today I am thankful for warm weather, some might say hot but not me! We've had a nice week of upper 80's which I've been enjoying...things will cool off a bit over the weekend and start to feeling a little more like fall...I even noticed in the forecast that there will be lows down in the 40's! Wow! So I'm just going to soak up as much of this warm weather while it's here! Linking up with Michelle's Thankful Thursday

Have a great day :)

Took this picture a couple of weeks ago when we were at the Boone's Mill Apple Festival ...the police officer is directing traffic...I liked the look of the building but didn't know anything till now, which is still next to nothing haha...it appeared to be vacant and I'd like to go poke around one of these days!

I found an old photo on the town's website HERE and if you scroll down it is 4th from the bottom, taken in the 1930's...I love old photographs don't you?!

Northside High School . Roanoke

Last week Lord Botetourt High School (us) took on Northside, a huge rival, and won 42-14...less controversy watching high school than the NFL these days...oh my!

1)
Last Saturday Nick and I went to the Harvest Festival at the Booker T. Washington National Monument

2)
There were reenactors...here is the census taker talking with Mrs. Burroughs the plantation owner...we've seen the woman in the blue dress at another event a few years back speaking about Sandusky...if you search in my blog for Sandusky you will find her! She's really good!

3)
Now the census taker is speaking with the slaves...they are listed as "property" :(

4)
In all of our visits to Booker T's, this was the first time we've seen the reenactors...it was neat...

5)
There was quite a big turn out!

That's my 5 this week! I hope you will join in too! Post 5 randoms, link back and visit others! Have a great weekend!

Bay Roc Marina

8630 Hardy Road . Hardy . VA . 24101

Saturday while driving around we stopped by Bay Roc Marina on Smith Mountain Lake. We walked around for a little bit, they have a nice little restaurant there and the employees were all super friendly. The manager told us the water was low because they drained the lake a bit with the scare of Irma last week and the possible flooding it would bring which turned out to be a little bit of rain in our area...nothing too bad.

Today I am thankful for living in a small community. It's almost like 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon around here! Somehow, somewhere you know someone through someone else haha...maybe that's not for everyone but I like it!

Yard Sale

Boone's Mill . Franklin County

Do you say "yard sale" or "yard sell" or something other? I say "yard sale" but hear a lot of people around here say "yard sell"...I don't know if it has something to do with the accent because I also heard it like that in Georgia...maybe I've been saying it wrong all along haha

The Love Bug

Boone's Mill . Franklin County

On Saturday we went to the Boone's Mill Apple Festival ...maybe I am missing something because I didn't see any apples but I did see Herbie and that's kind of better right?!

I found this groovy old Love Bug trailer from 1969!

Isn't this clip so wholesome?!

I remember seeing this film as a kid and then the remake with my kids! I should see if I can find the original online to watch with the kids...I doubt they would appreciate it though...

Today I am thankful for Anniversaries! It's our Wedding Anniversary! We have been married for 32 years, wow! Getting married at 19 hasn't always been easy but we've beaten the odds...lots of people said it wouldn't last yet here we are! I am thankful that I have given my kids a 2 parent house to grow up in...I see so many teenagers on social media posting about how lucky you are if you have parents still married to each other...I'm glad that that is something my kids can take for granted! We'll be celebrating at the football field watching the boys play...can't think of anything better! Here's to many more Anniversaries! Linking up with Michelle's Thankful Thursday

Majestic

Social Security Office . 612 South Jefferson Street . Roanoke

Overview
Watching over the main entrance to the Social Security Administration Building in Roanoke, Virginia, is this bronze eagle titled "Majestic". Few animals hold as much symbolism or generate the excitement and emotion as the American Bald Eagle. Strength, courage, honor, majesty, and freedom are all characteristics that are represented in this magnificent sculpture.
Goals
Creating a sculpture symbolic of courage and strength was important as the piece was designed for the entrance of the newly constructed Social Security Administration Building in Roanoke, Virgina. Different colored patinas were applied to add depth and help the eagle come to life.
Process
Every detail in "Majestic" was hand sculpted in clay, from the feathers to the rock formation on which the bird rests. The clay sculpture was then taken to a mold maker using a 2,000 year old lost wax process and then cast in bronze at a foundry, where the final patina color is also applied....copied from HERE

Just happened to be walking by one day and noticed this sculpture...now that I know all about it I'm going to have to go get a closer peep! For more on the artist you can visit his website HERE and I'm linking this up with Tom's Tuesday's Treasures

16th Anniversary

From the football stadium at James River High School . Botetourt County

“Time is passing. Yet, for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the last phone calls, the funerals of the children.” —former President George W. Bush

On a side note...I hope all our friends in the path of Irma are safe!

1)
Wednesday the boys had a game in Albermarle County...they played West Albermarle High School...the games are usually on Thursday's but had to be changed to Wednesday for some reason...of course it was a cold and rainy day...rained the whole 90 minutes it took me to get there...Dalton's girlfriend Kaile rode with me! (that's Dalton catching an interception)

2)
It didn't rain very heavily, just a constant annoying drizzle...then about half time it was like someone turned on a light and the rain stopped! The sky was such a pretty color, and bright!

3)
Hey Tanya, the game is straight ahead of you...(the sky and mountains were so pretty I couldn't stop looking!)

4)
Then the fog started to roll in and made it look so cool! (Dalton 21 and Braden 23...when they play on JV they don't have their regular numbers of 12 and 21 since they are technically on Varsity and never picked JV jerseys so they grab what's available on game day haha)

5)
Final score...Lord Botetourt Cavaliers for the win!

That's my 5 this week and I hope you will play along too! Post 5 randoms, link back and visit others as time allows (something I've been so short of lately, sorry!) Have a super weekend friends!

Boats on the Water

“It's when you smell the breeze; taste the salt and feel the waves beneath your feet that you truly know that you are alive.”
Anthony T. Hincks

Today I am thankful for chirping birds. Every morning there is one kind of bird (I'm not a knower of birds so I don't know what it is) that just chirps away and for some reason this certain bird takes me back to being a kid at my grandparents house. So every morning I have this sweet, nostalgic memory of happy times spent at Grandpa and Grandmas...funny isn't it what triggers a memory?

3902 Market Street . Wilmington . NC

Saturday was cold and rainy here. Nick and I were wanting to hit up our favorite taco shop down in Raleigh so Nick decided we'd go down there on Sunday and from there head to Wrightsville Beach and stay the night. The weather was perfect and the water warm! Oh, and the Mexican food was delicious!

Saw this sweet church in Wilmington. All I found on it was that it was built by Oscar Pearsall in 1913. Love the Palm Trees in front!

Willy Nilly Friday 5 No. 141 & A City Daily Photo Theme Day!

1)
This month's theme for City Daily Photo is "Photographing the Photographer"...I caught this guy last night at the JV game. Lord Botetourt hosted Blacksburg and won 26-20 in the last few seconds of the game!
This is a cheer dad...he was sitting a row or two down from me snapping pics of the cheerleaders while I snapped pics of the game (and him!).

2)
There's another "photographer"...she's from Blacksburg...I'm jealous because I have to sit in the stands to get my pictures...there's my 82 coming in (Braden)

3)
I figured since it was Willy Nilly and theme day I'd center Willy Nilly around the theme day :) ...there she is again...snap, snap, snap!

4)
Dalton 21 and Braden 82...they play Varsity this year but don't get a lot of play time yet since moving up so their coach knows how much they want to play so he let them play down on JV...on Varsity they are 21 and 12...it's an honor for them to move up to Varsity as a sophmore even if most of it is spent on the side lines!

5)
Dalton catching an interception and getting the ball back...that play turned the game around as we were trailing behind at that point!

So that's my 5 this week friends! I hope you will play along too! Post 5 randoms, link back and visit others!

And don't forget to check out the theme from all over the world by visiting City Daily Photo

Have a great weekend!!
