October Theme Day - Shelter

Daleville Kroger

Theme Day is here once more and the topic is Shelter. Crazy that it is already October isn't it? This photo is from back in August and I met this nice man seeking shelter from the hot sun. Tomorrow we're going to need more than this tree for shelter as Hurricane Joaquin will be bringing heavy rains and wind to our area over the weekend, on top of the week of rain we've already had. It's pretty soggy out already, I don't think we can take anymore rain!

CDP May Theme Day - Revolution & Willy Nilly Friday 5 No. 41

Buchanan...looks like a revolution right? The owners, Mr. and Mrs. Bray came to Buchanan from (him) Vegas and (her) NY to open the Glow-a-Rama...they say they are getting pushed out by the Buchanan powers-that-be...I don't know, there's always 2 sides to a story. My one and only dealing with Mrs. Bray and the Glow-a-Rama however was not a pleasant one. A few Mother's Days ago we all went to play mini golf, the 6 of us. Braden and Dalton had been awarded a free round of golf from the Glow-a-Rama for being on the Honor Roll at school. No restrictions listed. So we took their tickets and went to play golf. Go inside, tell Mrs. Bray the we would like to pay for 4 people and show her Braden and Dalton's free round reward (from Glow-a-Rama) and she says that they can only honor 1 ticket at a time. I asked why when each of them received one and asked why one should be punished basically because they are twins. I said, we are paying for 4 people, it is not like we are just coming in and using their free tickets and not paying for anything...*SIDENOTE*...the place was empty, just us...so she continued to argue so I said, "well, we'll just break our family up, I'll take Braden who will be free with his ticket and pay for myself and my daughter Ashlyn and then Nick will come in and he'll bring Dalton who will be free with his ticket and Nick will pay for himself and our older son Christian"...was told again that no, she couldn't do it that we either...she argued and argued and didn't make any sense and just made the experience so terrible that we never went back...we stayed because the boys wanted to play golf and I think in the end she did honor both tickets...RELUCTANTLY....

So...on this day that I took these photos, just a few weeks ago, her husband Ken was standing outside so my husband, who loves to talk and ask questions started asking about all these allegations...He was very nice (although he wouldn't let me take his picture) and took his time explaining his side of the story and then told us that his wife is the one who does the talking with the city officials...aha, it all makes sense now to us...Miss Personality has probably made a few enemies....anyways, I do agree that Botetourt needs something for the kids to do. We are supposed to be getting a YMCA but we also already have a gym so yeah....As the mom of 2 drivers I always hate that my kids have to drive into Roanoke just to go to the movies or find something to do. All this open land you would think someone could come up with a great plan for teens...anyways..enough of that...oh, and their snide remark about "Where's antique alley?"...read about Buchanan being one of the 10 best antiquing towns RIGHT HERE ....if you are super interested in the Glow-a-Rama revolution you can read an article HERE and if you would like to see other interpretations of the theme visit City Daily Photo

December Theme Day - People In Their Workplace

For this assignment I am transporting you back to 2011 the 1750's... The Ingles Farm
This woman is teaching us how to make candles...

This man is showing us what it is like to write with a quill

This man is showing us how to BREAK FLAX

Some of you might remember Braden and Dalton demonstrating this HERE

Ok, guilty as charged...these photos are from 2011 when we attended Cabin Days At The Ingles Farm . The theme day caught me slacking again! When I was looking through my archives for someone "at work" I had come across these and noticed I only posted THIS POST so I thought it would be a-ok to post the people at work!

November Theme Day - Landmarks

Lord Botetourt High School . 1435 Roanoke Road . Daleville

Ashlyn was home for the day from JMU. I took her out to lunch and was telling her I needed a landmark photo for the theme. "Think of a landmark in Botetourt" I kept telling her and we drove past the high school...I said "You know what, I'm just going to use LB (short for Lord Botetourt High) since that's a pretty big landmark for the area." She thought it would work as well. She graduated there in 2012 and Christian will in 2015...then the twins in a few short years...to see landmarks from all over the world visit City Daily Photo

Friday night we went to LB's football game. The boys dressed up as:

And about that give-a-way from yesterday...the winner is Marie from A Colorful World ...Yay Marie!! Thank you so much to all the people who entered! I'm looking forward to hosting another give-a-way real soon, that was fun!

August Theme Day - Take Away Store & Willy Nilly Friday 5 Number 6 @ Bowling's Hot Dogs

Gosh dang, another month, another theme day! The theme for City Daily Photo bloggers is Take Away Store, or for us Americans, "take out"! We stopped here one day a couple of months ago on our way to the Blue Ridge Farm Museum. We were hungry for lunch and really there is nothing out that way and we passed this little hole in the wall, Bowling's Hot Dogs. My friend Sunnybrook Farm will recognize this place I'm sure! Built in 1950, it's pretty simple and quite the hot spot. It was packed with locals. We ordered chili dogs and cokes to eat there but there were some people getting orders to go. It was good, we left satisfied! For more on Bowling's and how it got to be Click Here and to see "Take Away Stores" or "Take-Outs" visit City Daily Photo!

Now for some randoms:

1) Sorry I've been MIA this week. Like I said the other day, Nick took an unexpected vacation and that sure cuts into my blogging time haha although it's been fun, went to the New Orleans Saints Training Camp at the Greenbrier (see last post) and also went and saw Hercules. We all really liked it! It even had some funny points!

2) Today, Nick spent a few hours back at work and I took the boys and Ashlyn and her boyfriend back to the New Orleans Saints Training Camp lol...yes, we are addicted haha...those of you that I am friends with on Facebook have probably grown tired of my many pictures but those that aren't, don't worry, I have a bunch to share with you ;)

3) Picked up the boys' school schedules this afternoon and sat through a drug/alcohol and concussion meeting for sports. Yawn.

4) The weather here has been cooler, much cooler. Fall like actually. It's beautiful but I want the heat of summer. I want to know summer is still here. Fall will be here soon enough. Summer is the hardest season for me to let go.

5) On Saturday I will be the mother of a 20 year old. Yes, my baby girl turns 20! Holy (expletive)! Happy Birthday Ashlyn!

Ok, so now it's your turn. I hope you will join up even though I wasn't here to nag ask you nicely to play along all this week! Have a super weekend :)

June Theme Day - Zest

ZEST is the theme for June amongst the City Daily Photo group...I've been pondering how the heck I was going to participate in this one until....

Nick participated in his 4th triathlon on Saturday and I tagged along as his personal photographer and thought, "hey, this is ZEST"!

So, what is Zest? According to Merriam-Webster Zest is this:

zest noun \ˈzest\
: lively excitement : a feeling of enjoyment and enthusiasm

: a lively quality that increases enjoyment, excitement, or energy

: small pieces of the skin of a lemon, orange, or lime that are used to flavor food

The whole tri thing gets Nick going. I don't get it but hey, to each his own right?!

This was the "Off The Rails" tri in Vinton. For more info on that Click Here and to see more Zesty photos, visit City Daily Photo!

May Theme Day - Squares - Anne Spencer House - IV

This is the front porch of Anne Spencer's house. I love the checkerboard tile! And of course it fits right in for City Daily Photo's theme this month, so yeah...and here's more squares:

Isn't this gate precious and I just adore the color of paint...it's such a magical garden!

And now meet our gracious hostess:
This is Shaun Spencer-Hester. She is Anne Spencer's granddaughter and takes care of things. We were so fortunate to get the chance to talk to her and she is just one of those people that you can talk to for hours! If you have any questions about the house/garden/community you can click "contact us" on the website and she is the one that will answer all your questions. If you haven't checked out the website yet I encourage you to do so because not only is there interesting info on Anne Spencer and her history, but also histories of the neighborhood as well. Very fascinating stuff!
