Weekend Reflections - Back to the Candy Store

A trip downtown last weekend meant another visit to The Candy Store. I always love those skinny chickens so of course I had to take a pic. Some of you might remember the display from last month with the pink flamingos HERE. I hope they don't think I'm a stalker, 2 posts of their windows in the span of a couple of weeks, but hey, how can I resist such a cute window display?! And there go my boys right into the store, no hesitation. They are almost like the "Where's Waldo" on my blog. They are usually the ones walking in a door while I stand outside to get a picture haha.

The boys have baseball practice later today. Looks pretty out for it. Maybe I'll snap some shots. Christian is supposed to be going prom dress shopping with his girlfriend. Hope she's not half as bad as Ashlyn when it comes to dress shopping, for Christian's sake lol....have a great day!

Signs, Signs - The Candy Store

The Candy Store. 122 Campbell Ave. SE. Roanoke, Va 24011. P: 540.904.5580

Is this not the most cheeriest of storefronts ever?! Yeah, I know! So of course we went inside! We were so excited, Nick and I, to find candies of our youth and Braden and Dalton were just excited to find candy...haha

I had to have an Abba-Zaba and some BB Bats. I remember walking to 7/11 as a kid and buying chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and banana BB Bats when I was a kid whenever I was at my uncle's house. The 7/11 was right on the corner and safe for a kid of about 10 to walk to, back then that is! I also loved Abba-Zaba's. My own kids hadn't even heard of any of these but now are big fans. When we went to the counter to pay the cashier said "You must be from the west coast".... I of course wondered "Why"? and he said because "Abba-Zaba's were a west coast candy. People out east don't know about them." I said "Well yes I am." haha...so anyways...some of you might know the Abba-Zaba and some not. BUT...if you get the chance, definitely try one...they are SO YUMMY!

Nick wanted a Marathon Bar but the man said they don't make those anymore but sold him the Marathon Bar's English cousin, the Curly Wurly which was just like the Marathon Bar!

I had got the boys some Gold Rocks bubble gum...I used to love these too as a kid! Next visit I have to see if they have Flicks Candy. Anyone remember those? Another of my childhood faves. I also loved the bright colored foil tubes they came in.

We'll be back for sure!

Downtown Roanoke

Friday was the 3rd and last Dickens of a Christmas for the year...The boys and I went down there along with Dalton's girlfriend...a trip to Benny's for a slice of pizza for dinner and then the candy store for some dessert! There was a dog costume contest we tried to watch but it was so crowded we couldn't see a thing...there were lots of cute dogs walking around though :)

My gosh, can you believe it, another theme day! I love this month's theme and this is a favorite shop window of mine everytime we go downtown because it is always changing! I've shown it to you HERE and HERE but I know I have even more pictures of the different window themes stored somewhere...

Willy Nilly Friday 5 No. 25 - 6 Days

Christian & Alyssa, Braden & Dalton, in front of the Roanoke Christmas Tree. Last Friday night when we attended Dickens of a Christmas (see Monday's post)....I wonder how long they've been decorating this tree? I couldn't find anything on it.

Are you ready for this? Willy Nilly Time a la Christmas:

1) Back when Braden and Dalton were teency weency, I found the BEST recipe for Oatmeal Choc Chip cookies in one of the Southern Living Christmas books. I used to love those books and made sure I ordered one each year. Kind of been slacking in that department the past couple of Christmas's but I STILL make those cookies, which happen to be the EASIEST cookie recipe on the planet, plus they are Ashlyn's faves...you can find it HERE

2) When I was a kid, my Grandma Greer used to make Peanut Butter Fudge and these Peanut Butter Pinwheel thingy-majiggies. They were her specialty. They were scrumdiddlyumptious. Sadly my grandma passed away when I was in Jr. High, too young to have even thought about getting the recipe from her. BUT the nagger researcher that I am has led me to believe that these are quite possibly "Potato Candy" or "Peanut Butter Pinwheels"...Not being exactly sure, I am going to have to let my taste buds be the judge and try out these 3 recipes: recipe #1 , recipe numero dos , and numéro de la recette de trois ...thank you Google Translate ;)

3) Have you been to any of these Christmas light displays? Six Residential Streets With Amazing Christmas Lights
(There's a Candy Cane Lane listed in LA but I remember as a kid having a Candy Cane Lane in San Diego that we'd go see. I think they shut it down some time back though.)

4) Will you be having a white Christmas? We have a little snow heading our way Saturday but it doesn't look promising.

5) “Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before! What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!”
― Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

Now it's your turn!! Post 5 randoms, link up, visit other blogs! Have fun and have a super weekend!!

SkyWatch Friday

A beautiful end to a perfect Thanksgiving!

For SkyWatch photos from all over the world, visit
Skyley

Did anyone go out and brave Black Friday? If so, what did you get?
Have a great day!

One more thing:

A few days back I was tagged from D in Tuscaloosa and Rambling Round in Selma, AL

The rules of this Meme are:
1. Link to the person who tagged you.
2. Post the rules on your blog.
3. Write six random things about yourself.
4. Tag six people at the end of your post and link to them.
5. Let each person know they’ve been tagged and leave a comment on their blog
6. Let the tagger know when your entry is up.

So six random things about me, hmmmm:

1) I am a magazine junkie. I buy a new magazine everytime I go to the store because it has a pretty cover, then I barely skim through it when I get it home.

2) I love Disneyland. It's one of my favorite places to go. It is the "happiest place on earth". When we were leaving San Diego, I knew I'd miss my family, friends and Disneyland!

3) I want to learn to paint. I've always wanted to learn. When the boys started school, I was trying to find a class to take. Couldn't find anything until right before we left Georgia, I found a local woman who gave classes, figures. I've bought tons of supplies and books, but don't know where to start!

4) Today I am going to look up a "Potato Candy" recipe to use up my leftover mashed potatoes. My grandma used to make this when I was little and it was delicious!

5) I love quiet mornings when the kids are still sleeping. It's one of my favorite times of the day :)

6) I love antiques and old houses/buildings. I can spend hours on end going through an antique store or historic home/museum. I really feel a connection to old things!

Phew, trying to think of 6 random things is harder than you might think!

Ok, now to tag some friends :)
1)
Crittoria-West Paris, Me

2) Mo in London

3) JM in Oeiras

4) Olivier in Evry, France

5) Laurie in So Pasadena

6) Lessie in Anderson, SC

Gramma Ann, I'll do your tag next! I fell behind :)

Breakfast With Santa

This morning Braden and Dalton's school hosted a "Breakfast With Santa" featuring Santa Claus of course and all the pancakes and sausage you can eat!

After filling up on vittles, they went over and saw Santa, told him they want Rock Band for Christmas and received a candy cane.

As we were leaving, I met a mom of twins that I really liked alot and she invited me to join their twin club so I'm excited about that. I belonged to a twin club when Braden and Dalton were first born, but our club was a little on the boring side so I dropped out after a couple of years. I'm looking forward to joining this one and making some new friends!

I was planning on taking the kids to the Fincastle Christmas Parade today but it's very cold out right now and very grey. I'm not sure what kind of weather is in store for us so I'm just kinda seeing how the day goes. I really want to go to The Stonewall Jackson House as they have an old fashioned Christmas there today. I "think" Lexington is about a 45 minute drive from here and we haven't been there yet. Nick works on Saturdays so I'm debating whether or not I want to attempt this on my own seeing as I'm a girl that can get lost in a paper sack. Why does everything always have to be planned on Saturdays?!

Have a great weekend!
