Rurality Blog Hop #6 - Snow Day

Sigh....another snow day. This is what I woke up to. At least I woke up with power though, unlike some of my neighbors not too far down the road. It started last night. The boys had a basketball game. A tournament. We lost the first one by 3 points. It was a rough game with a lot of screaming and yelling going on from the other team's coaches and parents. Some of the parents were even yelling at their boys to "hurt them". Can you believe that? These are 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Not the NBA. It was a Blue Ridge team. I've seen them act that way during baseball too, same loud coach, same obnoxious parents. We are more refined. I like that. Anywho...since we lost the first game, we had to play again right after. Another team. We ended up winning by about 15 points. Our boys were on fire! By the time we left the boys' school, it had started snowing. I didn't think it was supposed to start until the middle of the night. I had planned a trip to Kroger after the game to pick up munchies for the kids to enjoy on their snow day. Started out of the parking lot, made a left instead of the right I usually take to go home. Drove about a mile down the road and decided to turn around and head back home. Snacks weren't worth risking our lives for since the snow was really coming down and you couldn't even see the center divider of the road or the sides of the road. Snow brings out my inner Southern California girl because we DO NOT know how to drive in this stuff.

Ashlyn was scheduled to work till 11 last night. I texted her and told her the roads were bad. She shouldn't try to drive home but get a bed at work and just sleep over. The hospital lets them do that. She hates to though. Had to once already this winter. She told me there wasn't any snow there. She works in Roanoke and we live in Botetourt County which is about 30 minutes from her job. She didn't listen. I had a feeling she wouldn't. She's stubborn that way. She tried to get home but the closer she got, the worse the interstate was and she started to get scared. She ended up going to a friend's house that lives near there and stayed the night. She called me when she got there and told me how scary it was. I was so relieved to know she was safe for the night and a little bit happy she had that scare of the snow covered roads that maybe next time she'll listen. You know, she's young....

Well, checking the weather forecast, it says it may snow throughout the day. We received about 3 inches overnight and could get another 1-3 today. Then winds. Heavy winds. BUT....they say it will warm up into the 40's tomorrow and Friday then the 50's over the weekend. Finally a warm-ish weekend!

Wondering if tomorrow will be a snow day too. Botetourt is pretty big and spread out, lots of rural back roads that won't get plowed making it impossible for the school buses. Fingers crossed...love spending snow days with my kidlets :)

  1. We are getting snow today too, but it is our first and probably the last of the season. We've had a dusting a couple of times, but this time we are getting about 10 inches, so they say. So far a couple have fallen and going strong.

Sorry to hear about the basketball game. Yes, I can believe it. It is disgusting and sad but believable. And that is what they are teaching their children to grow up to be. *sigh*

  2. Unfortunately over zealous parents are commonplace, especially when it comes to watching their kids compete at sports. Crazy! Hope the snow doesn't last too long or cause much disruption, great snowy photo though!

  4. This was the kind of snow that hangs on the branches and makes everything magical!
We only got an inch and it was lovely this morning but it's warmed up now and melting quickly.
    Enjoy your day!

  5. Beautiful capture, but oh gosh, hope everyone stays safe! Glad your daughter found someplace for the night. (I've seen crazed parents at many a sporting event, it's disheartening.)

  6. I'm glad your daughter is safe & you have power!

The storm is hitting us, not sure what we will get on the snow front but there is major concern about the high tides. They have already called off school for tomorrow & my money's on Friday being called as well. I feel so horrible for the people who live right by the water who are still trying to clean up from the last storm...

  7. You were wondering where that snow was and boy did it turn up. I heard about the power failures via Facebook. Take it steady! Looks beautiful, I must say!!!!!

  10. I love snow when we get snow days - but I'm about ready to be done. It's good that Ashlyn was able to stay with a friend, I always get a little scared when I know my kids have to drive somewhere in bad weather. - And how about that other team "hurt them"? really? I bet you're glad to be on a team with a little more perspective.

  11. We had snow last night as well, but not as much as you got. Our schools were closed, however. I grew up in the snow belt of Indiana, and I still don't like driving in snow. I hope you had a great day with the kidlets, even without the munchies.

  13. Tanya,

Enjoy all the snow days you have with the kiddos! At least your snow will not last long this time of year.

I wish we had some snow, we need the moisture! Other than this week's cold and wind it has been prefect for calving.

Spring rains will be here before we know it.

  14. I heard that your part of the county had it bad. Hopefully this will be the end of it. I grew up in Portland Oregon where we get snow and Ice every year, driving in it does not get any easier, it sounds like you made a good choice to stay home.

  16. I'm glad your daughter made it to her friend's okay. Kids never listen. What a storm, I wouldn't want to drive in it either! You guys stay warm and enjoy your warmish weekend.
We have been near 80 the past few days but have snow predicted for Friday night into Saturday. Just in time to cancel the Farmer's Market. (sigh)

  17. That snow is lovely, but looks heavy... with your approaching winds, I hope your trees and shrubs can handle the stress... Glad Ashlyn had the good thought to stop when she got scared... Thank you for joining in 'Rurality Blog Hop #5' Hope to see you next Wednesday for #6...

  18. You're brave trying to get out in that! Glad you (and your daughter) got off the roads quickly. Boy, some parents can be horrible at kids' ball games!
