Over spring break we went down to
Cumberland Island/St. Marys and camped for a week. While walking along the shore, we saw these
Horseshoe Crabs. We first found an empty shell of a horseshoe crab a couple years back at Tybee Island, washed up on the shore but we had no idea what it was.
It was interesting watching this group of crabs. They stayed bunched together like this for about 10 minutes, then they all kind of formed a line and swam out to sea!
What a great picture. I can't even imagine being able to see something like that. We've been to the ocean several times, and never seen anything that cool! Have a good one.
ReplyDeleteNeat, I checked the link, pretty interesting, 10 eyes? wow.
ReplyDeleteNice photo. I've never seen these before.
ReplyDeleteThey're huge. I live on the coast, and i don't see them that size. Good shot.
ReplyDeleteOh, I like this shot! When I lived on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, I'd go up to Lewes, Delaware to see the horseshoe crabs come in to lay their eggs - they arrived by the hundreds, it seemed.
ReplyDeleteyou really have some interesting stuff there! :)
ReplyDeleteWhen "Louis la Vache" saw the subject "crabs", he thought you were referring to his mood this morning. He hasn't gotten his "Caffeine Meter" out of the danger zone yet today....
ReplyDeleteWere they mating?
ReplyDeleteVery cool shot.
I've found dead ones but can't remember if I've seen a live one.
FUN!
Oh, I hate these animals (Limule in french), they're so frightening. They remind me of "Alien", the movie!!
ReplyDeleteFortunately, there are no horseshoe crab in France.
Great shot!!
An excellent shot! These are creepy, but you can't stop watching them on the beach, because they are so prehistoric! We find them washed up all the time when we are in Beaufort, South Carolina. Have never been to Cumberland Island. It looks beautiful! Loved your photo today!
ReplyDeleteNever seen these before and I live very close to the beach!
ReplyDeleteOh, what funny looking critters! Great photo!
ReplyDeleteThanks for leaving a comment on Glasgow DP - much appreciated :)
I agree a little with Alex (LOL) that they are a little frightening looking.
ReplyDeleteWhat a neat find!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun photo...and it brings back lots of memories, too!
ReplyDeleteGood shot! Too bad they're not edible. They are strange looking critters alright.
ReplyDeleteje ne connaissais pas ce style de crabes. petite question, ils se mangent aussi ?
ReplyDeleteI did not know this style of crabs. small question , they also eat?
Oh, what strange animals, I never see them.
ReplyDeleteInteresting creatures, I didn't realize how large they are.
ReplyDeletevery interesting - they all have different individual markings - fascinating
ReplyDeleteThey look like something out of a sci-fi movie. Some kind of outer space creature. It must of been interesting to watch them huddle, and then line up and swim out to sea.
ReplyDeleteI find them quite ugly and impressive though they remain important according to the ecologists.
ReplyDeletegreat photo, i too have never seen these creatures before. they look like they belong in the past. the distant past. ok, they creep me out just a little :)
ReplyDeleteVery weird and interesting animals, never had the chance to see one…
