Willy Nilly Friday 5 Number 10 - Downtown

Somewhere downtown....

Random 5's

1) Soooo we switched internet providers this week. We've had Comcast ever since moving here to Va. Started out ok..but then when you have an outage...good luck with that. They automatically blame your system...then when you finally convince them that it is on their side they will come out and then "oh, yeah, it's something on our side"...duh....so that wasn't even the worst of it. So like I said, we've been great customers since 2008. The last few years our internet charge went from the "promotional" $40 a month to $80 a month. Who pays $80 for internet anymore? It's not a new thing. So every 6 months our bill goes to $80 and then Nick has to call and complain and they will give us a new $40 promotion that is good for another 6 months. Well needless to say we end up paying the $80 for a couple of months before we realize it since it's automatically drafted from our bank account. What a PITA! Switched this week to Lumos, cheaper and supposedly better with the fiber optics. Whatever...I'm just happy to be back online! Shame on you Comcast for treating loyal customers like crap but giving new customers the best deals. Isn't that the way with every company now-a-days though?

2) Ash is back in town for a long weekend. The boys have a surprise birthday party to attend on Sunday so I thought Ash and I would catch a movie since the theater is right across the street from the party locale. Thinking of seeing The Giver. It has Meryl Streep in it. That's all I need to know! I really also want to see When The Game Stands Tall but I'll save that to see with the boys....

3) Speaking of games, the boys have been playing really well. Braden has been announced leader of the team for the 1st two games! Kind of pi$$es Dalton off since they are so competitive with one another lol. That's Braden in the white jersey. He just got an interception. Got tackled in the next frame or two...that's Braden's thing, interceptions. He prides himself on them!

4) Had some Basil in the garden that I didn't want to lose. My Basil didn't really grow like crazy this year but still...had a bit to save. Then I heard on Martha Stewart radio where someone called in that they make "Basil Balls" with their leftover Basil. Blanch the leaves then freeze in individual serving sized balls and pull out all winter when you want fresh Basil! So that's what I did this afternoon. Made Basil Balls. What a great idea! Need more info on it, Click Here

5) Sad news about Joan Rivers. What a ground breaker she was. I have to say I never liked her when she was being so nasty on the red carpet but as a comedian she was hilarious. The end of an era....her family must be devasted...so out of the blue...

Now it's your turn!! Post 5 random thingie-majiggies, link back here and post your link so we can visit!! Have a great weekend!!

  1. I had Comcast when we were in Mississippi. We didn't really have a lot of choice for providers and I have to say they were better than the other company (Bell or AT&T, I don't remember). I also remember the "promotional" pricing games and whatnot... stupid! glad you found someone else and hope it works out. It's terrible to be without the internet.

  9. I have Mediacom and I'm having the same dance with them as you did with Comcast. I'm about ready to tell them to pound sand! Love the action shot! Sad about Rivers. She was a great comedian.

  11. Hi Tanya, first time joining you :) What a good idea to freeze herbs. I misunderstood the news and thought Joan Rivers was out of ICU for a good reason and was happy for her, but then I read the bad news that she had left us.

  12. I was thinking bad of our provider, but I see that there is always something worse around...

  15. Don't you just hate it when the cost of things creep up on you like that! So far Direct TV has remained stable here. It's $60. But now we've lost a channel we used to watch several shows on. A screen comes up and says that Direct TV didn't renew that channel and to go online for updates about it coming back. That's ridiculous! Good Willy Nilly Friday Five. Thanks for hosting this...I do enjoy joining in!

  16. I totally agree about Joan Rivers. She was mean and nasty to people. But she made a lot of money from doing it, so that was just too tempting. My mom always used to tell me that three famous people would die in a row and she was always right. So now we have had two and I am waiting. Comcast is horrible and I am glad you are rid of them. I have heard stories that would raise your hair. Once when their line was very long, they made a little old lady wait outside on their bench for hours, in the rain!! Then they closed at closing time and she never did get to talk to them. She returned the next day with a shotgun. We had Lumos for a few years and bundled the T.V. with our phone and computer. They were good and always had tech support 24/7. And we live just five minutes from them. I want to try the basil balls!!

  18. We get our Internet through Quest and a Private ISP and only pay about $40 a month. Glad you are back on line.
Sounds like you have fun with your boys and sports. I was always thankful our kids really weren't into playing sports.
    Enjoy the movie.
Yes we've lost a lot of different people this year. Always makes me feel sad.

  19. Our cable company is supposed to be gobbled up by Comcast so I hate hearing that! We don't have many options out here in the country. Oh, well... I want to see "The Giver." I read the book years ago and liked it a lot. Joan River's death does seem sudden but it just is a reminder of the transience of life.

  20. Are you serious? Most plans are around 20€ a month here, that would be something like 25$ I guess, maybe a little more but including TV and landline...

  21. You're right about the prices, new customers get great rates and the rest of us pay for them. Glad you were able to save your basil. There are some movies one knows will be good just by the cast. Meryl Streep never lets us down. It sounds like both your guys are very competitive. It will serve them well.

  22. Totally with you about Joan Rivers. I never liked her caustic personality, BUT...one can't deny her contributions and groundbreaking for females in comedy. RIP Ms. Rivers, you will be missed.

  23. If you guys hate Comcast, you better pay attention to that net neutrality thing that's going on. Comcast and the other big communication companies like Verizon are trying to take over the Internet. Remember when TV was free? Then cable came out. You could get movies that previously you could only see in the theaters and there were no commercials. It started out at $10 a month. Once they got everyone hooked, they started raising the prices and started adding commercials and recently the government got rid of the "regular" TV so now we have no choice but to pay and we find ourselves with nothing better than what we used to have when it was free. They're doing something similar with the Internet. Right now it's free to use the Internet, other than what you pay your service provider who gives you the connection. I'm not real savvy about this stuff to explain it right but they are going to control all the data that goes over the "airwaves." They will slow down the people who don't pay and speed up those who do. So when you Google, you will only see things come up that were paid for by the big corporations and the little guy's stuff, someone's website for a little flower shop say, or even big sites like Etsy, won't come up for pages and pages and pages and maybe never and when they do come up, they will be S L O W.... Comcast and Verizon are trying to get rid of what is called "Net Neutrality." The FCC is supporting it because the big-wigs gave them money. That's it in a nutshell. Not enough people are screaming about it because we don't understand it. But you think you've got trouble now with crappy Internet service providers.... Google it. While you can, lol.

  24. Yes, Comcast is known for having the worst customer service around. We've gotten money credited back from them a couple of times because they guarantee they will keep their service appointments and then they don't!
