Through My Lens - Ye Olde Mystery Store

Corner of Williamson Road & Reservoir . Roanoke

With yesterday's post I learned that Carvins Cove was once a little thriving community, about a hundred years ago. This little "store"? sits on the road to Carvins Cove. I've passed it about a million times and each time wondered about its history (little historical things should always have a marker right?)...I've found mention of a Kay's Cabin which was once a residence but turned into a store. I'm wondering if this is what they refer too? Still not anything significant to report...I hope my pal Gil over at Sunnybrook Farm will know...He usually knows a bit of history about every photo I post! I'll have to go ask him, hang on!

  6. You got me this time, I haven't heard of Kay's Corner. That structure doesn't look all that old as things go so I am not sure if it would have been a cabin. That is an interesting area and I have always been puzzled about the location of the original valley road through there. If you look over the hill toward Hollins, there is a cemetery that might have been located along the road at one time. If so then the original intersection would have been up behind this store. I know that the railroad that was going to be built was back that way and would have gone through the Hollins campus, I believe one of the streets is actually the railroad bed that never was completed. There is probably someone who has the answer but not me this time.

  7. Very interesting old building, still standing. Maybe we could write a story about it?

  8. Just think of the stories that could be told if those walls could talk. I love it. I think buildings are absolutely beautiful. They are our history.

  11. It's nice they are still around, nobody tries to demolish it and use the place for something.

  12. I'm glad it's still standing! These old pieces of history are too often left to fall down. There was an old store not much bigger than this not far from my dad's farm when I was growing up. The couple that ran the store lived in 2 rooms in the back! Sadly, the place was torn down a few years ago, but I did get some pictures before that happened. I wish I had some photos of it in it's heyday, but no one thought to take them back then.
