I think this particular Mick-or-Mack was built in 1953 and is the only one left in the area. I found THIS interesting little story about Roanoke in 1931 with mentions of Mick-or-Mack.

Goodness 63 years, that's quite a good run for a business these days Tanya, let's hope it keeps going for many more!
ReplyDelete...oh Tanya, I remember as a kid grocery stores like this, what a throw back! All that it needs is a coin-operated horse next to the Coke machine. That for stopping by.
ReplyDeleteClassic style grocery store with a unique name. Hope this store prospers in the future. Looks like your photo could have been taken in the 1950s.
ReplyDeleteThat's one I'd never heard of before.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of nick-nacks but not Mick-or-Mack. I don't think 1953 was that long ago at all. I bought my first car that year - a 1937 Chevy!
ReplyDeleteSo it started in Roanoke and stayed there, holding on despite Kroger and Food Lion. And this is the very last one. Strange name for sure, it really does look pitiful.
ReplyDeleteWhat a vintage sign. Good article, it mentioned S&H stamps, my mother used to collect them all those years ago.
ReplyDeleteMy mom did too! I loved helping her and my grandma stick them in their books and then shop at the stamp store!
DeleteDifferent era...
ReplyDeleteLooks like it hasn't changed at all since it was built. A beautiful snapshot of 1950's architecture.
ReplyDeleteNever heard of this one before. Very cool store!
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of this store, but the look of it reminds me of a five and dime.
ReplyDeleteThat is a catchy name!
ReplyDeleteNice color in that picture!
ReplyDeleteNever heard about Mick-or-Mack before... read the stoy to learn more about your past. Good that it is still open - I like such little grocery stores. Wish, we had one here nearby!
ReplyDeleteI never heard of this chain but it's sad to see it go by the wayside, like many others. Thanks for the photo and the link with the information.
ReplyDeleteCute name for a shop!
ReplyDeleteLove it! What a great shop!
