Monday Murals - Dorothy Gillespie

The Old Grand Piano Building . 2nd and Church . Roanoke

I read somewhere that this was the first mural in Roanoke and installed in the 70's by Roanoke native Dorothy Gillespie. I also read that the owner of the building is thinking of removing the mural...boo!

I found a recent article about Dorothy and there is an old Roanoke Times story featuring her and also an old picture of the mural...it was much brighter then of course! You can read that article Right Here

  3. Murals fascinate me, and it's always sad when they end their lifespan. But in a way, that's the kind of art work that they are, it's in their nature to be transitory and not last. Even Leonardo Da Vinci's murals painted on the wall of a civic building in Florence didn't stay around for posterity.

  4. The mural looks great on that building. Hopefully the owner will change his/her mind and keep it.

  7. My grandparents originated from Martinsville, Va. They often went to a camp-meeting in Roanoke. I wonder if it is still there?
