Kane

 I shared with you the passing of Ozzy on June 24…we miss him so much and the house was just too quiet and lonely…I found Rottweiler puppies that had been born June 28 and we picked out Kane…we picked him up from Knoxville on August 7, Nick’s birthday…I had forgotten what a handful puppies are lol…thank goodness for nap times!

Ozzy 2/20/2011 - 6/24/2022

 

I remember the day we drove down to NC to pick up Ozzy…I had been anxiously awaiting the day we could get him and on that day we woke up to snow! No way was I going to let that stop us!

Ozzy’s 11th and last birthday…

I miss him so much…he was so loved 💙

CDP Theme Day - Wood

Nick and I took a little drive around yesterday, mainly to find Devil’s Marbleyard…this is the start of the Belfast Trail that takes you there…according to the sign it’s a mile to Devil’s Marbleyard from here but we never made it…Nick has been having problems with his knees and was in quite a bit of pain halfway in so we’ll save it for another day…we will definitely return…

This trail takes you past an old Boy Scout camp called Camp Powhatan that ran from the 20’s through the 40’s…there’s some ruins to see…I thought it was probably a creepy place to be at night!

The Weekend in Black and White - Le Monument Aux Morts

 

National D-Day Memorial . Bedford

This is a replica of Le Monument Aux Morts which was created by sculptor Edmond De LaHuerdrie in 1921 as a memorial to the 44 men from Trevieres, France who died in World War 1. The sculpture, Victory Holding a Sword, was damaged on D-Day. When it was recast for the National D-Day Memorial, the damage was symbolically preserved.

Tuesday’s Treasures - The Bedford Boys

 

Greenwood Cemetery . Bedford

Continued from yesterday…after leaving the D-Day Memorial we went over to Greenwood Cemetery where several of the Bedford Boys are buried…

I believe there is a ceremony held each Memorial Day to honor these young men…we showed up a little before it started…

Ray Stevens was a twin. His twin brother Roy survived. They were the uncles of a friend of ours. I remembered him telling us the story about them.

Captain Fellers had signed himself out of the sick bay to fight with his men.

John “Jack” Reynolds grew up on a farm in a family of 8 children. He had begged his mother to let him join the National Guard with his friends.

Master Sergeant Wilkes was one of the first to land on Omaha Beach.

There is a great tribute center for the Bedford Boys that is housed in the old historic Green’s Drugstore…we visited there about the same time and I have a lot of pictures to share…to see more on the tribute center you can visit their website HERE

National D-Day Memorial

 

National D-Day Memorial . Bedford 

Today marks the 78th anniversary of D-Day…Nick and I spent Memorial Day there last year…these pictures are from that day…

Bedford was chosen as the site of the Memorial because they lost 19 boys that day, The Bedford Boys…possibly the largest per capita loss in the country.

On this visit we took the guided tour which I highly recommend. We have visited the memorial before but didn’t take the tour.

We learned so much from our tour guide…

The hidden symbolism that we missed our first time.

I found a news story that I will post at the end of my pictures that talks of the symbolism.

I remember the guide telling us that this statue was made in the likeness of one of the Bedford Boys who always had his Bible with him…if you zoom in you can see his Bible laying next to his head.

If you are ever in the area I suggest you visit.

Last fall my best friend and her husband came out to visit from California…we were so excited to show them around our beautiful Virginia! Believe it or not this was our first time to tour Monticello! It had been on our list since moving here…we have toured Jefferson’s other home, Poplar Forest which I’ve shown you way back! 

I have a back log of photos since I’ve been a super bad blogger over the past couple of years…I’m trying lol

Mulberry Row was the dynamic, industrial hub of Jefferson’s 5,000-acre agricultural enterprise.  As the principal plantation street, it was the center of work and domestic life for dozens of people — free whites, free blacks, indentured servants, and enslaved people.  It was populated by more than 20 dwellings, workshops, and storehouses between 1770 and the sale of Monticello in 1831.

Tuesday’s Treasures - A Mystery House

Nick had told me about this little area he had seen along the James River that looked like an old kind of abandoned village/community … we were out driving one day and found it! 

I was obsessed with this old place though…

Behind it runs the James River…

This is the old place I mentioned in yesterday’s post…

I couldn’t find out much information on it…on the same property is a home which is lived in and they obviously take care of this great old place…

If anyone stumbles across this blog and knows anything about this old home please fill me in!

Nick and I went out for a drive recently and everything is blooming! 

These were taken in Buchanan on the James River…see that old house in the background? I’ll show you that tomorrow!

Why can’t pretty flowers like this just pop up in my yard? I have to buy them lol

Everything is so green! Spring is my favorite time of year!

We just kept driving and ended up in Eagle Rock!
