Friday Fences & Randoms

Frontier Culture Museum
This little cabin had tobacco hanging inside but it doesn't look like a tobacco barn so I don't know. That is tobacco growing on the other side of the fence. Friday Fences

Now some randoms:

1) I am SO excited to hear that one of my favorite books will be made into a movie, FINALLY. I read the Big Stone Gap series years ago. I had heard a rumor long before we even moved to Virginia that there was a movie in the works. I even emailed the author and asked and she confirmed it. I have been patiently waiting since then. And then, last week in my Facebook feed I saw her post THIS! Yay, it is happening. And I'm so happy that it will be filmed there locally!

2) Bears! We have a mama bear and I've heard 2 cubs in our neighborhood. The boys have seen her on ocassion but I haven't. I have seen the proof when she's been in the yard. She picks our trash can right up and lifts it over a retaining wall to sort through in the front yard. The news has THIS to say about all the bear sightings in neighborhoods recently. I really feel sad for them.

3) I want a morning to sleep in past 7!

4) I yelled at our football coach at last night's practice. The boys won their game on Wednesday, 6-7. At practice last night, the asst coach was going through their warm ups then afterwards they all gather in a huddle to get stickers for best plays etc...instead he started to yell at them and said "I am NOT happy with that win on Wednesday. You did not give me the shut out win I wanted so you will run 6 hills". That really ticked me off as they were being punished because they did not score enough for him? I jumped up like a crazy mom and went to the coach who was just yacking with a dad and said "Really, they're punished for a win because it wasn't a shut out?" and he said that they were having to run hills because they weren't focused. Well that's not what the assistant was yelling about but ugh, and I wasn't the only one that wasn't happy with that. I just happen to be the only one with a big mouth I guess ;)

5) Oh, I watched a great documentary on Netflix the other day, The Dust Bowl. I really enjoyed it. It was very moving. What hard times those people went through.

Have a great weekend!!

  5. You have lots of info in your post today!. The link on bears is fascinating. We don't need your photos of them; too dangerous -- stay inside!! Good for you for confronting the coach!! That's the best kind of parent involvement rather than screaming for victories or upbraiding the kids for mistakes. Incidentallly, the link on #1 didn't work for me.

  6. That coach is an idiot, it is so hard to motivate sometimes and then to just waste it with his sorry attitude is a shame. He needs to find another sand box to play in.

  7. I love the Big Stone Gap books .. hope the movie does the books justice. Yikes, Bears! Good for you, yelling at the coach. I agree with Sunnybrook -- he needs another sand box to play in.

  8. I haven't read the Big Stone Gap books--didn't know about them. But now I better check them out!

We have bear sightings in the area, but we haven't seen any. I would love to see one--safely, of course.

Good for you for speaking up to the coach. I don't like to see coaches let their own egos get in the way of what the kids need.

  11. I think I need to look up that book - I'm not familiar with it. Good for you for having a big mouth - I sometimes wonder if sports is any fun for the kids anymore. Wow - your bears are pretty bold - I hope they don't end up getting hurt for being somewhere they aren't wanted.

  14. Bears? Yikes! We've never seen any around here, but my grandma is convinced that I should never go outside alone for fear that a bear may appear and eat me haha.

  15. I have a friend who grew up in Big Stone Gap. In fact I have two friends that did. I am going to post this info to them on facebook hoping that they will enjoy seeing a movie about their old stomping ground. Thanks.

    1. this is just rec. we've had the same coach for the last 3 years but he didn't coach this year so we are adusting to a new team, although luckily 3 of the assistants/friends from our old team is helping. just so happened none of the 3 were there last night otherwise i would have safely said something to them lol...i'm better behaved when it's school ball! i promise!

  17. Tanya, most coaches try to get across the idea that you can always do better and you shouldn't settle for just OK. Don't bail your kid out. Let him run the hills. Running is good for kids.

    1. oh i know. i don't ever bail them out. we've been in sports for a lotta years. i'm a stickler about it all. this is rec, it's all volunteer coaching, which i totally appreciate. just this one coach is known for being out of control. we've had him before when we first moved here. but running hills because it wasn't a shut-out win is just ridiculous in my opinion.

    2. i just don't want you to think i rescue them from hard work, because i really don't ;) i swear in all the years of sports between the 4, this was probably the 3rd time i've complained! lol

  18. I have seen The Dust Bowl before...heart breaking! I didn't realize how many people in so many states were affected! And not to even be able to breathe...never even thought about that! And seeing how the dirt would blow through the cracks in the houses and just cover everything....and the poor kids (and adults) with asthma! Just made me so glad that we learned about soil conservation and erosion....maybe that won't repeat itself!

Good for you and your "big mouth" sticking up for the kids. All you moms should pull your kids out of football until an apology is made. That would just be unacceptable. It's a GAME!!! That coach should be fired! That's what is wrong with schools these days....put so much emphasis on winning in sports because of all the money it brings into town instead of focusing on educating these kids so our country won't fall!!! SHAME ON THEM!!!

  19. Bears in the neighborhood! I wouldn't like that.

  20. I love the museum and old-style fence!

  21. I think the football coach needs to appreciate a win a little more, good job his team didn't lose or he would probably have had them running up and down hills all weekend!

  22. I love that fence! I don't see many like that here.

  23. I never had the tough skin needed for being a sports mom -- you go get 'em Tanya! :)

  24. Hmmm, me thinks that coach is a bit off... I'm with you, a win isn't good enough?? I think sport for kids should be about sportsmanship and fun, not winning...

  25. We have had quite a few filmed here in Lex since I moved here 35 years ago. This one sounds wonderful. I guess I need to read the book. And those fences. We are so lucky to have so many of them here in VA. They are the BEST. genie

  26. Gosh, you be extra careful with that mama bear around, alright?

Love the rough-hewn wood of the shed and fences.
