Hollins University - Charles L. Cocke Memorial Building

Hollins University . 7916 Williamson Road . Roanoke

"The Charles L. Cocke Memorial Building, also known as the Administration Building, was built in 1908 as the Charles L. Cocke Memorial Library. Shortly after the death of President Cocke in 1901, students, faculty, alumnae, and friends established a building fund to construct a library in memory of Hollins' founder. At nineteen years of age, Charles Lewis Cocke stated his desire to devote his life to the higher education of women in the South, a goal that he fervently pursued at Hollins for fifty-five years. The library was completed in 1908, and Charles L. Cocke's daughter and succeeding president, Matty L. Cocke, participated in the groundbreaking ceremony. It was a fitting memorial to one dedicated to the education of women and described by an alumna as "a man of books and thoughts." Charles L. Cocke exhorted his students to continue their studies after Hollins, "Read and study, young ladies, not the light literature of the day, but books that are books--books of thought, books of breadth and depth and grasp of meaning, that your powers may be still further disciplined, that your fund of knowledge may be enlarged, and your mental vision expanded." (Excerpted from Mary Williamson, "A Library Memorial to Charles L. Cocke" Spinster [1908])" Taken from HERE

Through My Lens - The Homeplace

The Homeplace . 4968 Catawba Valley Dr . Catawba

Pulling into The Homeplace for dinner on Sunday. So cold and rainy out. We had the 3 meats, roast beef, fried chicken & ham. It's delivered to your table family style with mashed potatoes, gravy, cole slaw, green beans, pinto beans and biscuits. Cobbler for dessert, but that had to go home with us, no room! Everything was so yummy! The restaurant is an old 1907 farmhouse, it's just beautiful! For more on The Homeplace, visit their Facebook page HERE & I'm linking with Mersad's Through My Lens

Monday Mural - Scoop

Freedom First Credit Union . Daleville

One day last week I had to stop and do some banking and noticed the Freedom First Ice Cream truck in the parking lot as I was leaving. Of course I was curious about it so I came home and Googled it:

"Freedom First bought an old ice-cream truck to deliver free ice cream at student,
nonprofit, and community events throughout the Roanoke and New River Valley communities. When Scoop
arrives loaded up with several different frozen treats (including sugar-free!), staff and volunteers are there
to hand out smiles and build relationships—not to sell products. Information about financial education is
available, but Scoop doesn’t carry sales brochures." (From their website)

Pretty cool huh?! Linking with Monday Murals

My daisies are blooming :)

No for some randomness:

1) Have you heard about the monkey selfie hubub? A photographer was in Indonesia photagraphing monkeys. They became curious about his equipment. He left a camera there and came back and found that the monkey had taken several pictures including this incredible selfie. Now Wikipedia has snatched the selfie photo claiming it doesn't belong to him because the monkey took it. Now there's a big ol' lawsuit going on and Peta jumped in and thinks the monkey should own the copyrights lol...I sure hope that photographer wins this crazy lawsuit and shame on Wikipedia and Peta! You can read about it all HERE and see the famous selfie.

2) I just saw this commercial and really liked it:

3) Craigslist Mirrors ...this person scouts out Craigslist for listings of mirrors and posts the pictures on his website. Quite a unique niche!

4) Yesterday while unpacking some boxes (yes, I'm still unpacking, don't judge me!) I turned on The Identical on Netflix. It has Ashley Judd in it so I knew I'd like it. I was only half watching as I was working but it seemed really good. It starts out during the depression and this young couple has identical twins that they can't support so they give one to their Pastor and his wife who are unable to have a baby....and you will have to watch the movie to see what happens...actually I'll have to re-watch it to see what happens since the power went out half way through!

Just sitting there abandoned....

The wolf then came to the house of bricks.

" Let me in , let me in" cried the wolf

"Or I'll huff and I'll puff till I blow your house in"

"Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin" said the pigs.

Well, the wolf huffed and puffed but he could not blow down that brick house.

Through My Lens - Ye Olde Mystery Store

Corner of Williamson Road & Reservoir . Roanoke

With yesterday's post I learned that Carvins Cove was once a little thriving community, about a hundred years ago. This little "store"? sits on the road to Carvins Cove. I've passed it about a million times and each time wondered about its history (little historical things should always have a marker right?)...I've found mention of a Kay's Cabin which was once a residence but turned into a store. I'm wondering if this is what they refer too? Still not anything significant to report...I hope my pal Gil over at Sunnybrook Farm will know...He usually knows a bit of history about every photo I post! I'll have to go ask him, hang on!

From Colonial Baptist Church parking lot. Blue Ridge

Wednesday night, coming home from the boys' football game, this is what the sky looked like. I didn't edit this photo at all. Aren't those colors beautiful?! I apologize for the ugly power line but there was a church service going on and the parking lot was full and I didn't want to look like a weird stalker running around out in the parking lot in case they could all see me from a window...how embarrassing that would be! I couldn't take my eyes off the sky though!

So now for my randoms...I hope everyone is having a great week!

1) Seal Surfing on a Humpback Whale

2) Did you know otters can get asthma? And learn how to use an inhaler!

3) I just finished reading Here On Earth by Alice Hoffman...I enjoyed it. If you want to read it, I'll be happy to send it on to you...just let me know in the comments!

4) Last weekend I watched The Duchess on Netflix...it was really good...so very sad though...I did some serious crying towards the end.

5) Have you seen Pioneer Woman's dishes/cookware at WalMart? I'm not a big WM fan but I love her dishes...I really like the "Flea Market" stuff...you can see it HERE

Well that's it for me this week! Hope you will join in! Post 5 randoms, link back and visit others!! Have a great weekend!

Blue Ridge Service Center

Blue Ridge Blvd . Blue Ridge

This is near our new house. I've always loved the Coke sign and have always meant to stop and snap a photo of it. Well now that we live nearby, here it is...it is tilted, but I was parked on a hill...this location isn't the easiest access. My husband has stopped by a few times to pick up this or that as it is the most convenient place to our house. The owner does not speak English, not that that is a big deal but he will not even try to communicate with you. He's rude enough that my husband now drives the extra few miles down the road to Food Lion for anything we need to pick up. He's given the guy a few chances but he never even tries to be polite or appreciative of the money you spend there. He wears earbuds and will not answer questions. On my husband's last visit my husband tried to hand him his money, the man would not hold his hand out to accept it so my husband just let it all fall on the counter and walked out. That is the last time he has been there. I haven't even given it a try. Our older son Christian won't go just because it's not that easy to access. It's just too bad because it is a cute little place and I do love that old Coke sign! Just be nice when we try to spend money in your store, is that too much to ask?!

Do you continue to shop at places where you've had rude service?

At the start of summer, we visited Ashlyn at JMU then walked around downtown Harrisonburg. Found this little gem for lunch:
We like funky little spots which have withstood the test of time...
I loved this little old school glass they brought out for my drink!
A round of chili dogs, fries and onion rings...so good...and I Love Lucy playing on the tv!

Willy Nilly Friday 5 No. 51 - This Week

This week for Willy Nilly I'm going to show you 5 things I've seen through my camera lens this week:

1)
The boys' football game Thursday. They played Staunton River Middle School and won 40-0. The photo above shows Dalton running the ball and Braden #16 was blocking for him. Braden wanted me to delete this photo because it shows that he didn't block good enough and allowed Dalton to get tackled lol

2)
A familiar sight which is gaining more and more in popularity since the whole Confederate Flag controversy. The yellow flag is the Virginia Don't Tread On Me flag.

3)
As seen leaving the Bonsack Kroger...God welcomes Kroger shoppers ;) Clever!

4)
The area to the right has been a hot spot since we moved here. It was once a truck stop with a hotel, gas station and restaurant the truck drivers frequented but it caused traffic to be a nightmare in the area. Ever since we moved here in 2008 there's been talk of tearing it down. Well, just recently they did just that. Problem is though that there is not another place for truck drivers to get a good night's sleep for quite a distance away. I've heard they are supposed to put a round-a-bout in at the intersection, not sure...I don't think anyone really knows what they are going to do with this area. But honestly, it really hasn't solved the problem since there is a gas station to the left that the truck drivers now use and block traffic in the other direction....and the people who plan this stuff are highly educated right?

5)
Just a pretty old house in the Bonsack area....with lots of power lines ruining the view ;)

Once again I am going to apologize. I haven't gotten my groove back and a good blogging routine yet since the move. I really do apologize and have meant to visit...it seems like I've been a broken record about that lately :( I will get a system eventually, right?!!

It's your turn, post 5 randoms, link up and visit others!! Have a great weekend!! And to my American friends enjoy the long weekend (Labor Day!)

Good Fences - Mountain Pass Road

Mountain Pass Road . Blue Ridge

Another snap taken on my way home from school. The boys have a football game this afternoon and Braden has requested French Dip sandwiches for dinner afterwards. I found the easiest recipe for them a few years back, it's a Rachel Ray version I think. Get some deli roast beef cut, sprinkle Montreal Steak Seasoning on it, soak it in beef broth till hot and top on crusty rolls with a piece of cheese (we use Provolone) and use the broth to dip. So yummy and so easy!
