Slone's Grist Mill

On Sunday we went to Explore Park to hike around a bit. Before we moved here in 2008, Explore Park was a living history museum. These historical buildings were all moved here for that reason but it was very short lived and was already closed by the time we got here :( The buildings are still here and there are big plans to get this place going again.

My 1 complaint while there is that the trail to the historical area is also a biking trail and we had this group to contend with:
It was a large group, loud and obnoxious and riding their bikes in the grass tearing it up...I thought bike riders respected nature? Anyways the historical area is quite small and they took up quite a bit of room. There are miles and miles of trails, I only wish they would keep the historical area accessible to only foot traffic as this group had no desire to see the buildings, just used the area as a rest area ruining the tranquility of it for everyone else...ok, ruining it for me ;) anyways, that's my rant now to show you some pictures of the mill:

I've posted about Explore Park a few times before HERE HERE & HERE
and you can learn more about the park HERE

  1. Old mills are always a treat to find and this one is great in its original condition. Thanks for sharing Tanya, I'll be by Friday to see you.

  3. These are lovely, wonderful looking place and I hope they will bring it back to being a living museum one day. I enjoy those places. There is one in Yorktown which I liked walking around very much. Too bad about the noisy group of bike riders. I get a little nervous when walking on a trail and all of a sudden you hear in a very loud voice, passing on the left. I almost jump out of my shoes.

  4. I would like this place a lot; and your photos are wonderful giving us a fine portrayal of what it looks like. I'm a bike rider but not one of "those" people who hog the roads and treat other folks with disdain... Sorry your rest area was not restful.

  5. I totally agree with you about these riotous miscreants! Yes, they should make it a walking trail only. The mill is Norman Rockwell gorgeous! I love visiting mills, and have not seen this one before. Your pictures are great, showing all the angles. And such pretty yellow wildflowers! Looks like wild mustard or goldenrod. This path is so beautiful!!!

  6. It is a nice visit to the old mill. Too bad the bikers were less polite than you wanted. I both bike and hike, and like to think that all can be accommodated if people are courteous.

  7. Too bad that park went under. I guess its hard for nonprofit museums to make a go of it unless they get big grants.

  9. I've actually been thinking a lot about the role mills like this served in the early history of our country. Seems like milling was a major industry.

  10. Many bikers are civil and courteous but I feel less kind toward them anymore as bikers have increased in numbers with their seemingly disregard for traffic rules and basic safely measure.

  11. A great location for a mill. The area looks nice to explore and it's too bad the bikers were jerks when you were there.
