Tuesday’s Treasures - The Hodges’ Farm

Floyd County . Va

This is a sad story…a few weeks back Nick and I took the Parkway and just headed south…we ended up in Floyd County like we did back in 2013…we knew we were close to this horse farm…we remembered meeting Betty Jo Hodges while we were looking at this old school house…she drove up and started telling us about her horses and that we should take the boys over to see them…we did and her husband was very nice to show us around…I posted pictures and conversations on my blog…things look much different now…

It has been abandoned…no sign of a nice couple and a barn full of horses having lived there…

The Government now owns their property…why? I don’t know…I had forgotten how she had told us that the Government was trying to get them off their land until we came home and I read my blog posts from our visit back in 2013…

Mr. Hodges didn’t mind that 4 strangers came driving up telling him his wife sent us to come and look at the horses…he showed the boys a big black snake that was coiled up in his lawn mowers engine and patiently walked us through the barn even though it must have been a hundred degrees that day…

Today this farm looks nothing like it did when we met the Hodges back in 2013…

When we got home I looked up my blog posts and tried to find information on the Hodges…sadly Mrs. Hodges passed away in 2018 and I don’t know where Mr. Hodges ended up…

Here’s a couple of pictures from our original visit in July of 2013:

  1. That is a sad story. Can you find out what happened to the Hodges and post it on your blog? I suspect all your followers are interested.

  2. A sad story told over and over across North America. Oh, the reason the folk are forced off their land changes but the result is the same.

  4. How sad! I wonder what became of him? It doesn't feel like much time has passed, but I guess July of 2013 was almost nine years ago. A lot can change in nine years.

  6. That is so very sad Tanya. Mr. and Mrs. Hodges must have been wonderful people. I heard a similar story only recently.
