Willy Nilly Friday 5 No. 133

Grandin Village . Roanoke

1) The last 2 weeks have been crazy busy! Ashlyn is moving out and we've been looking at apartments...there sure is a lot of junk out there...places that smell like 100 years of cigarette smoke, ick! We stopped looking at apartment buildings and started looking at old houses in the historic areas that have been made into apartments. Those seemed better with nice neighborhoods that she could walk her dog around and be close to downtown. Well yesterday after looking at a lot, and I do mean A LOT of junky, dirty places, we found it! It's a cute little 2 bedroom in the Old Southwest Neighborhood of Roanoke...she goes in and does her paperwork this morning...I hope she will be very happy there!

2) On Wednesday I took the boys to the movies. They wanted to see Cars 3 ...it was pretty cute! We laughed a lot, which is always good!

3) Have you heard of these "rock clubs"? Well the city that I am from, Santee has one and I've been following on Facebook. The objective is that you paint rocks, hide them around your city and then people find them and post a picture on Facebook in the group. It makes a lot of people happy and it looked like such fun so I created one for our county here. You can look at both groups to get an idea: Santee Rocks & Botetourt Rocks ...Botetourt Rocks is just a baby, started a couple of weeks ago so I hope it takes off! Maybe you might like to start a group where you live?

4) A new brewery just came to town, Ballast Point. They are from San Diego so it's kind of neat having a little bit of "back home" way out here! We went to check it out this week and tried their California Burrito. If you know us, you know that we miss our Mexican food and there's nothing like a Carne Asada Burrito from a SoCal taco shop! A "California Burrito" is a Carne Asada Burrito with French Fries inside...not my favorite, I prefer just a regular Carne Asada Burrito (no fries)...anyways, it was pretty good...not taco shop, this was more restaurant style and Nick and I both prefer taco shop style...we split it in half because we didn't have high expectations as to it being just like we are used to...and like I said, it was alright, well better than alright...it was pretty tasty and definitely better than any Mexican food here...but I wish it was a taco shop style and at $14 for 1 burrito, that is a bit high! We will be back though.

5) The Salem Fair is back in town...might take the boys tonight...I missed it last year because we had just gotten back from Mexico and I just felt so sick so Nick took the boys and dropped them off so they didn't miss out but I hated missing the fair!

That's my 5 this week! Hope you play along too! Post 5 randoms, link back and visit others! Have a great weekend!

Trojan Dog

Fire Station #7 . Memorial Avenue . Roanoke

Trojan Dog was created in 2008 as part of a city-wide public art initiative, "A.I.R" : Art in Roanoke".

The original doggie was meant to be temporary and made of wood. A woman climbed up on his back one night after leaving a bar (you do the math) and knocked off his head. Trojan Dog #2 is much more sturdy and now a part of Roanoke's permanent art collection.

Today, and every day, I am thankful for dogs! Linking up with Michelle's Thankful Thursday

This is near the Jaycee Camp in Blue Ridge

4)
The gate was closed so we couldn't drive any further...the sign said "unsafe road condtions" so we walked down the road to find out why...

5)
Ahhh the road was washed away! Crazy!

RAMP Regional Accelerator . 709 South Jefferson Street . Roanoke . 24016

Originally this old building, the Gill Memorial Hospital, was the Commonwealth's first specialty hostpital founded in 1926 by Dr. Elbeyrne Gill. Now it is home to RAMP...for more history on the old building CLICK HERE

This photo was taken a couple of weeks ago while we were checking out a festival.

Today I am thankful for swimming pools and night swims...last night after dinner Braden and I took a long swim. The pool has finally heated up to 80+ which is how I like it! I had forgotten how good you sleep after a good swim! Linking up with Michelle's Thankful Thursday

a little late this week! Ashlyn and I worked the polls for the Virginia Primary yesterday...long day! Fun though...the people we work with are just so nice and fun to be around...and the voters are always friendly...and I didn't know that Meryl Streep's twin sister lives right here in Botetourt County...she came in to vote...seriously, this woman looked exactly like Meryl Streep! I told her so and she said that wasn't the first time she's heard that!

Happy Wednesday :)

Wingless Takes Flight

Wilson Hughes Gallery. 117 Campbell Ave SW . Roanoke . 24011

This wall on the side of the gallery is pretty awesome...all different work from different artists. I knew this one had to be a Toobz Muir painting when I saw it. His work is so unique. You might remember some of his stuff I've shown you HERE

About this one, taken from his website:
"Wingless takes flight"

Concept: Children teaching little birds how to take flight before they realize that they already have the power to leave the nest. 2010

I'll show you more of the wall next week!

Back in April we went to Buchanan's Civil War reenactment, The Battle of Buchanan's Main Street Skirmish...
1)
Something is getting started....

2)
I think I've been spotted...

3)
Bang, bang, bang....hey I like the way the Buchanan Theatre sign is lit up!

4)
Darn, they caught Nick!

5)
He looks like a friendly guy!

We've been to a few more of the reenactments in Buchanan over the years and I've shown you HERE

That's my 5 for the week! I would love if you played along too! Post 5 randoms, link back and visit others!! Have a super weekend :)

That's the Masonic Theatre over there. It was built in 1905 and still going strong...for more info on the Theatre CLICK HERE

Today I am thankful that my sweet Ozzy is feeling better! Last week he tore a pad right off his front paw. I noticed him limping and not using that paw and when I took a closer look the pad was just hanging there....looked so painful. I cleaned it up and bandaged it, kept that up for a few days and he is back to his old self...thank goodness!

Black Dog Salvage

Black Dog Salvage . 902 13th Street SW . Roanoke . 24016

Do any of you watch the Black Dog Salvage show? I do occasionally. I find it interesting to learn the history about the places they go to and then it's fun to see some of the things from the show back in the shop for sale! Admittedly I haven't watched in a while though but I think it is on Netflix. I've shown you Black Dog Salvage a few years back Right Here ...look how little my boys are in that photo! In the above photos we just happened to be driving by a couple of weeks ago but didn't stop...I do need to make a point to go poke around again soon!

Mick-or-Mack

1312 Winbourne Street SW . Roanoke . 24016

I think this particular Mick-or-Mack was built in 1953 and is the only one left in the area. I found THIS interesting little story about Roanoke in 1931 with mentions of Mick-or-Mack.

Anon Muralist Hits Grandin

Reid's Furnishings . 1324 Grandin Road . Roanoke . 24015

Apparently this artist and the village of Grandin wants this artist's work to be kept on the down-low...I have combed through Google and can't find a thing...I showed you a similar mural HERE a few years ago and couldn't find out anything then either...oh well...whatever!

Have a happy Monday!

1)
This little room is in The Homestead and it is where they used to have telephones back when that was a thing! Now all the phone plugs are plugged up but here Nick is posing on his cell...I guess they could turn it into a charging station!

2) The boys had their last baseball game tonight...kind of glad that's over. They both ended on a good note!

3) I've watched the whole series of Grace and Frankie on Netflix...I think there were 3 seasons...with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. I really liked it...it's really funny.

4) I also just finished watching Anne With An E on Netflix...I really liked that as well. It is only 1 season so far.

5) Trying to make some small summer plans. Since Nick changed careers he can't take time off really so we have a few things not too far that sound like fun to do...I think "staycations" are fun too!

That's my 5 this week and I hope you haven't forgotten about me since I've been gone so long! Post 5 randoms, link back and visit others! Have a great weekend :)

City Daily Photo Theme Day - Nature

These were taken from our stay at The Homestead earlier in the month. Since I've barely shown you around I figured today's theme of "Nature" was a good excuse to show you around the grounds of the hotel...and I am sorry, I grouped a few so I could give you a tour ;) ...Now let's go!
Here's another neat old car pulling up for you auto enthusiasts...I've shown a couple in the past week or so...there was a Bentley convention going on at the same time we were there...
We didn't use the pool as it was a pretty cool weekend while we were there...looks inviting though doesn't it?
Golf is pretty huge at The Homestead and this little mini golf course gets them learning early I guess ;)
I love this hall...we used it a few times to access the little downtown of Hot Springs ...
I think this would be fun to do! I would like to try it out when we come back with the boys one day!

So that's my Theme Day post featuring "nature" and for more interpretations on the theme, visit City Daily Photo

And since it is Thursday I am thankful for summer time schedules...ahhhh, my favorite time of year! Linking up with Michelle's Thankful Thursday

Have a great day :)
