The Old Clifton Forge High School

Saturday afternoon Christian had a couple of baseball games in Clifton Forge, Alleghany County. We've driven through Clifton Forge before to get to Douthat Park but I hadn't ever seen this part of it. The baseball field sits next to this gorgeous old high school. I tried to get more info on the school but didn't find much. There is a date of 1928 on it but I do not know how long it was open. I did see at one point, not too long ago, a woman wanted to turn this great old school into an art school but it became too costly and they ended up using a different building in Clifton Forge. I sure hope this building gets a second chance at a new life!

  5. Thanks for sharing this beautiful old school with us. An old high school in my hometown, built about the same time and looking very similar, has been converted into condominiums. I attended that school almost 65 years ago and it is nice to see it in its new role.

  6. If it's been there since 1928, that's one old school, but it looks to be in very good condition.

  9. A really nicely composed photo. Its annoying sometimes when you cannot get as much information about a place than you wanted.

  18. What a beautiful photo of a beautiful old building (love the gracefully drapey evergreen branches in the foreground!). This, to me, is what a school building should look like. I got to attend my last three years of high school in a similarly charming old, red brick building with white trim (and cupola!) in Kennebunk, Maine. Not long after I graduated, they stuck a horrid, modern-looking blocky addition onto it! A travesty! I hope Clifton Forge's old high school building is treated with more respect, and as you say, is given a second chance at a new and noble life!

  19. There's an old elementary school in Blair much like this one that was turned into apartments. It's very popular and rather pricy. Perhaps that might be an option.

  20. I love the classic old schools. Kelly's new school here in Jersey looks similar to that. What's really cool is there are carved cement heads of a female on one side of the building over the doorways and a male on the other side of the building over the doorways because I guess the boys and girls went in and out separate entrances in the old days. I should take some pictures!

  22. The school opened its doors in 1930 i believe and first graduating class was 32 or 34. Last class to graduate CFHS was 1984. From then until 2001, it served as Clifton Middle School. It has been vacant some since 2001 and is currently in need to repair. It is owned by town of Clifton Forge. Exterior is beautiful. For the paranormal fans..it is proven to be haunted....

  25. I'm a grad of CFHS, class of '64. Considering how well loved the school was, if it's haunded, it's probably just the faculty and students that have passed on having a reunion!
