In April we were driving through Buena Vista and I noticed this building on the hill so of course I had to get closer! This is Southern Virginia University, a private school which was built in 1890 as the Hotel Buena Vista. I found this really interesting blog post on the history of both the hotel and town of Buena Vista HERE

Wonderful find.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful architecture!
ReplyDeleteA very special changeover from hotel to university, but a beautiful building.
ReplyDeleteWow what a grand place!
ReplyDeleteIt is quite a site/sight, but I was very surprised to know it's a Mormon institution.
ReplyDeleteI was too!
DeleteThat is an incredible looking place. Love to see the inside of it.
ReplyDeleteYou share very interesting sights with us Tanya, thank you and also for the link which I am going to look at now.
ReplyDeleteThe blog post has beautiful old photos, or are they drawings? They are rather haunting. Your pictures are the modern counterpart, and are glorious! Even the sky is such a brilliant aqua. The first picture is my favorite. The second picture is a wonderful angle for the gables and architecture. And the last picture is a great front view. I have been through Buena Vista many times, but never spotted this! Perhaps I will have to make a special trip!
ReplyDeleteWhaouou yours skys are so blue
ReplyDeleteWOW, what a handsome Victorian building! It's great to see it so well cared for. Thanks Tanya for sharing this treasure. Hurry back now!
ReplyDeleteWhen it was Southern Seminary the VMI cadets referred to it as Hungry Hill.

ReplyDeleteThis is a very impressive building.
ReplyDeleteThe building in your third photo sure looks like a grand hotel from out of the past. Glad it is still being used.
