Hancock Building

35 Campbell Avenue . Roanoke

Hancock Dry Goods was built in 1898. In 1929 was purchased by Pugh Department Store and in 1965 Grand Piano purchased the building and bricked over these gorgeous windows and terra cotta mosaics...why oh why would anyone do that??? Anyways, since then it has been restored and renovated into apartments...

Woolworths

Campbell Avenue . Roanoke . circa 1920's

I've loved this art deco sign since first seeing it. I've always wondered though why it is called "The Woolworth" and in my search for info this morning I learned that this building has had several different lives but nothing has stuck since the Woolworth days and it now may or may not be apartments...I saw where they were converting it to apartments and office space but that is about how far the info went that I found and when converting they changed the name to THE Woolworth...guess it makes it sound fancier...I prefer the original though. I guess I'm more traditional :)
