Wild Flowers

Nick and I went out for a drive recently and everything is blooming!

These were taken in Buchanan on the James River…see that old house in the background? I’ll show you that tomorrow!

Why can’t pretty flowers like this just pop up in my yard? I have to buy them lol

Everything is so green! Spring is my favorite time of year!

We just kept driving and ended up in Eagle Rock!

See you tomorrow with pics of that old house!

Tuesday’s Treasures - The Hodges’ Farm

Floyd County . Va

This is a sad story…a few weeks back Nick and I took the Parkway and just headed south…we ended up in Floyd County like we did back in 2013…we knew we were close to this horse farm…we remembered meeting Betty Jo Hodges while we were looking at this old school house…she drove up and started telling us about her horses and that we should take the boys over to see them…we did and her husband was very nice to show us around…I posted pictures and conversations on my blog…things look much different now…

It has been abandoned…no sign of a nice couple and a barn full of horses having lived there…

The Government now owns their property…why? I don’t know…I had forgotten how she had told us that the Government was trying to get them off their land until we came home and I read my blog posts from our visit back in 2013…

Mr. Hodges didn’t mind that 4 strangers came driving up telling him his wife sent us to come and look at the horses…he showed the boys a big black snake that was coiled up in his lawn mowers engine and patiently walked us through the barn even though it must have been a hundred degrees that day…

Today this farm looks nothing like it did when we met the Hodges back in 2013…

When we got home I looked up my blog posts and tried to find information on the Hodges…sadly Mrs. Hodges passed away in 2018 and I don’t know where Mr. Hodges ended up…

Here’s a couple of pictures from our original visit in July of 2013:

Signs 2 - Po’ Boys BBQ

Copper Hill, Va

Well hi! Didn’t mean to be gone so long…every time I go to post I just don’t know where to start and then think to myself  “I’ll just do it tomorrow “ so here we are, a few tomorrows later lol…

Anyways on Saturday Nick and I jumped on the Blue Ridge Parkway headed to Explore Park…well part of the parkway is closed and we knew that so we followed the detour signs and then decided to head to Floyd County instead…we stumbled upon this little place and I have actually posted about it before Right Here and funny enough I now work with a man who lives in this area and knows the owner of this place! I guess it is actually open and serves food and had some good reviews on the bbq. Maybe we will get back there and try it!

I’ve got more pictures from this outing that I will share and an update from an old post in this same area…lots of abandoned stuff!

Monday Murals - Beautiful View

Wasena Park . Roanoke

This mural was created by Jared Bader of Philadelphia. It is titled “Beautiful View “ which is what Wasena translates to in Native American.

I found this on RoanokeVa.Gov

Also nearby I noticed this trash can!

It says “Howbert Farm”…obviously I had to go home and find out more info…

This house once stood on the corner of Floyd Ave and Main St in Wasena…It was part of the Howbert Farm. The picture is taken from the original in 1895…that is the Custer Family posed on the porch…

I found a copy of that picture on VirginiaRoom.Org

Now I need to go back and find this house:
I learned all of this just because of a pretty little trash can!

Oh and these were taken during the summer! I just hadn’t gotten around to sharing!

Not Snow Much

Blue Ridge. Botetourt County

For a week they were forecasting soooo much snow!! Like 24 inches worth of snow!! I started to get a little worried…stopped at the store on my way home Saturday and picked up some snow food in case we were unable to get out of the house for a day and starve!!

It snowed for hours!!

I heard somewhere around 7 inches…that sounds about right…

Today was freezing and windy

Braden is snowed in at his girlfriend’s house…texted me yesterday that he took a home Covid test and it was positive…we’ve all been sick here too…I took a home test last week and it was negative…Nick took one last night and it was positive…Dalton has an appointment to be tested on Wednesday….

I went out to clean my driveway and my neighbor came over and helped me…they both just had Covid…it really is spreading like crazy right now…

I had to run to Food Lion this afternoon to pick up some more meds and Airborne…the roads were still a bit icy and the parking lot was cleaned up pretty good…hoping everyone wakes up feeling better! I’m sure glad we didn’t get as much as they were thinking!!
