This is the old Daleville College which is now an apartment building. I love the red steeple :)

Daleville College D-41 Daleville College began as a private school that Church of the Brethren educator Isaac N. H. Beahm conducted for the children of Benjamin F. Nininger and George Layman in 1890. The construction of school buildings began the following year. In 1892, the school incorporated as the Botetourt Normal College. It was renamed Daleville College in 1910. Affiliated with the Church of the Brethren, the college merged with Bridgewater College effective in 1924. The campus became Daleville Academy, a secondary school, until it closed in 1933. The surviving academic buildings here are good examples of early-20th-century educational architecture in Virginia.

ReplyDeleteThe school has seen many changes in usage over the years. Fortunately, the building is in good shape and is till there.
ReplyDelete"Daleville College" sounds like the name of a school in a television show in the 50's or 60's. I love it. It must have been very important to your community when it was operating. You're a good tour guide, Tanya.

ReplyDeleteWell, I, for one, am glad to see that they didn't tear this building down before deciding to turn it into an apartment building. I hate it when they tear down old buildings. I'm always interested in the history of old places like this. I wonder if there are any ghosts there?!?! That's also very interesting to me!!!

ReplyDeleteI was just Googling "Daleville College" out of curiosity and stumbled upon your photo. I lived within sight of there when I was in third grade (1967-68). We lived in the old house next door to that apartment building in the right foreground. At that time the college building was abandoned and the brick hadn't been painted white.
