Southern Virginia University aka Southern Seminary

In April we were driving through Buena Vista and I noticed this building on the hill so of course I had to get closer! This is Southern Virginia University, a private school which was built in 1890 as the Hotel Buena Vista. I found this really interesting blog post on the history of both the hotel and town of Buena Vista HERE

American Tobacco Historic District . Durham NC

Old 1800's train car, used for corporate events. You can see The Cage in the background from last weeks post. Also, you can see the Lucky Strike water tower in the reflection. I love the scroll-y iron!

The Cage

American Tobacco District . Durham

The Cage is an outdoor basketball court. This was awesome! I really wish our county would build stuff like this for the kids. There really isn't much for them to do unless they go to Roanoke.

Seeing as how I am totally obsessed with Mad Men right now (on season 6) I am going to feature the American Tobacco Historic District in Durham...which I LOVED!

Lucky Strike! The whole being of Mad Men! (we don't smoke by the way!)

2)

3)
A life size chess game with tobacco leaves, Lucky Strike and the famous bull of Durham!

4)

5)
Is this a Sterling Cooper ad?!

I love Durham...we venture down to Raleigh quite frequently and Durham is about a half hour closer to us but this was our first time to stop...I know we will be back again as there is so much to see and we all just loved the tobacco district! Rapps Mill Post Office

Rapps Mill Post Office circa 1888-1932...Rockbridge County, near Lexington

Click Here for a great story regarding the area and a man named Jim Parsons.

Near the old Post Office sits this old homestead:
After reading the story I discovered that this place was built in 1836 by Mathias Rapp, Jim Parsons's Great Grandfather.

This is such a neat area, I really want to go back and see more!

Willy Nilly Friday 5 No. 82

Since Ashlyn graduates tomorrow and I took some pics of her on Sunday I am going to show a few of my favorites!

1)
Ashlyn's major is Political Science and she spent much time in Miller Hall

2)
This was an accidental picture. It was windy and she was trying to get her cap back on, waiting for the wind to stop....turned out to be one of my favorites!

3)
A couple more of my favorites that she wouldn't agree with...here she is posing with James Madison and again the wind blew her cap off but she looks like she is having a genuine good time with old James here! Makes me smile!

4)

5)
And here she is with Duke Dog!

That's my 5 this week and I hope you will play along! Post 5 randoms, link back, visit others!! Have a great weekend!

Good Fences - Spring Meadow Farm

We were driving by this pretty place right outside of Lexington and pulled over into a parking lot across the street so I could snap a quick pic. There is a nice sign hanging at the entrance of the driveway that reads "Spring Meadow Farm circa 1859" ...I have tried to find info based on the sign but nothing comes up except a few real estate listings.

Changing the subject, it's a cold, rainy day here today. Not supposed to get out of the 50's. This is May! Blah!

Tuesday's Treasures - Historic Durham Athletic Park

Durham, NC

"Originally named El Toro Park when it was first built in 1926, the Historic Durham Athletic Park served as the home of the Durham Bulls for almost 70 years, and was a film location for the movie Bull Durham. In 1995, the team moved to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, a mile south, but this field is still maintained as the home of the NCCU baseball team and is available for rentals for special occasions."
