Daleville College
This is the old Daleville College which is now an apartment building. I love the red steeple :)
Taken from the historical marker:
Daleville College D-41 Daleville College began as a private school that Church of the Brethren educator Isaac N. H. Beahm conducted for the children of Benjamin F. Nininger and George Layman in 1890. The construction of school buildings began the following year. In 1892, the school incorporated as the Botetourt Normal College. It was renamed Daleville College in 1910. Affiliated with the Church of the Brethren, the college merged with Bridgewater College effective in 1924. The campus became Daleville Academy, a secondary school, until it closed in 1933. The surviving academic buildings here are good examples of early-20th-century educational architecture in Virginia.

See You later !
Beautiful building! The apartments must be great!
ReplyDeleteVery attractive building. Colleges have really spread out since then!
ReplyDeleteA beautiful view from the windows...
ReplyDeleteI would have had trouble following the teacher and not dream looking at the view!!!
Tanya, you live in such a beautiful place! I love all these photos with the mists upon the mountains!
ReplyDeleteWhat a bwautiful setting to have done your schooling.
ReplyDeleteHope, I LOVE this misty mountains too! It makes for dangerous driving though because I get so fixated on them, I should really pull over, lol.
ReplyDeleteThe school has seen many changes in usage over the years. Fortunately, the building is in good shape and is till there.
ReplyDelete"Daleville College" sounds like the name of a school in a television show in the 50's or 60's. I love it. It must have been very important to your community when it was operating. You're a good tour guide, Tanya.
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty steeple!
ReplyDeleteYour pictures are beautiful! I love that area.
ReplyDeletedo they landmark buildings in Virginia? This should be protected. And what is the "Normal" designation about? Very peaceful scene.
ReplyDeleteI thought it looked like a church too, and then with your history of the building, I guess in a way it was.
ReplyDeleteI love to see these old buildings and read about their history.
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting my Prescott blog!
All is nice in this building! Just like what I can imagine when I think about "America"!
ReplyDeleteOlivier is right, it does look like a small church! I like the red steeple too! I am really curious aobut the building with the porch next door!
ReplyDeleteWell, I, for one, am glad to see that they didn't tear this building down before deciding to turn it into an apartment building. I hate it when they tear down old buildings. I'm always interested in the history of old places like this. I wonder if there are any ghosts there?!?! That's also very interesting to me!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice looking building. That must be a nice place to live and to have been educated at.
ReplyDeleteI love the red steeple too! And like Olivier, I first thought it was a church. I think it's wonderful that old buildings like these have been put to other uses — much better than just having them demolished.

ReplyDeleteI love old buildings and find it fascinating how different things are from country to country, that's why I enjoy visiting your blog.
ReplyDeleteYour photos have got always beautiful colours.
ReplyDeleteWonderful building - I'd live there.
ReplyDeleteHi there,
ReplyDeleteI was just Googling "Daleville College" out of curiosity and stumbled upon your photo. I lived within sight of there when I was in third grade (1967-68). We lived in the old house next door to that apartment building in the right foreground. At that time the college building was abandoned and the brick hadn't been painted white.
Wow, that's nostalgic - thanks for capturing it!
thank you for your note!
