The Other Side Of The Gate

Yesterday I showed you the old route 220 that ran through our property more than a hundred years ago.
On Sunday, Ashlyn and I were taking a walk around the pond to see how things have been changing since the change of seasons. The photo above is the backside of the pond, taken from the other side of the gate in yesterdays photo. Here, you can really see the the road clearly.

Later in the afternoon, our neighbor from down the railroad tracks stopped by to introduce himself and ask permission to ride through our property while hunting. He offered my husband some venison in return.

He was a very nice gentleman, born in the same house he is living in 68 years ago! He warned us that he and his hunting buddies have been spotting alot of bear while out hunting, in the thicket across the tracks. He told us he's even been keeping a close eye on his grand daughter. Yikes!

  1. Deers & hunters & bears, oh my!
Another lovely view of your surroundings. The history of the place sounds so much fun to explore - do you think they have old photos of the house? Keith from Monrovia posted some photos of the streets from 70's (not that long ago but lost of fun to see).

  3. I don't have any really old photos. I found an older photo from a book at the historical society when they did a story on our house but it was taken in the 50's so nothing has changed since. My neighbor has photos, but ones that were taken from 1948-1999 when her mother in law owned it and same with the gentleman we just met. He said he spent alot of time here as a young boy and will see if he can find some old photos.
I would love to find some older ones though.

  4. Are you sure the 'bear thing' is not an excuse to kill every living animal around your place?

  5. Ah no, he's not hunting the bear. I don't know when bear season is. And honestly, I don't want them getting deer off our property either, which they aren't, but still, I see so many deer on our land and hate to think of them getting killed. But I guess hunting season keeps the numbers in check, sad as it is to me :(

  6. Oh how scary. Do your bears hibernate during the winter months?

  7. That would be neat to find some history of the old road.

Are you allowed to shoot the bears?

  8. Yikes indeed! Don't get a small dog. Your property is beautiful.

  12. Saretta, he's going to bring us some venison sausage and I think some tenderloins. As to how to prepare it, I have no clue, lol but I guess someone will help me out. My grandma always cooked it for my grandpa but sadly they have passed away :(

Wendy, I'm anxious to see all the different seasons around here too!

  14. Such a pretty area! Hunters ask to cross our land, but they never offer me venison! Now I feel gyped!! ;-) Venison is yummy. The bears around here stay far away from people, although they are known to raid bird feeders occassionally.

  15. Yikes about the bear! The road really shows up well in this photo. Hope you all like to eat venison! Burgers are best. Nice neighbor.

  16. I think hunting is a complicated issue. I know lots of people who hunt and they're very serious about it. It doesn't appeal to me but I don't object to it especially since I know that with deer they do have to be kept in check or they would become a problem.
