Horatio Howard Building (Farmers’ Supply Store)
101 E. Main St.
1897. Horatio Howard constructed this building after the great 1896 town fire. Note the cast iron “stars” capping structural tie rods, the pressed glass tile transoms on the storefront, and early painted advertising on the west wall. Originally a mercantile store for Howard and partner Thomas B. Huff, it’s been Farmers’ Supply Store for about 85 years.

I like these old towns. I could take the walking tour. Neat brochure they have.
ReplyDeleteI love old buildings.
ReplyDeleteWow! that's a huge "coffee" sign! :)
ReplyDeleteThe building looks in good shape and still in use.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful building with heavy monsoon view!
ReplyDeleteI love old buildings, especially when they have old signs painted on them!
ReplyDeleteI bought a pair of plow handles there a few years ago, couldn't find them anywhere else, they were for a plow not the little ones for garden tools.
ReplyDeletenice, bright signage on that brick.
ReplyDeleteThat's a wonderful old fashioned sign. Not many farmer's supply and hardware places survive. There are many fewer farmers and the hardware business has been taken over by big box stores. When I moved to this town in the 1970s it had a half dozen hardware stores and at least two farmer's supply places. We now have two hardware and one farmer's supply stores. Fine sign.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing the old buildings around your area and that one is a beauty! :)
ReplyDeleteI like seeing these older places still in use and surviving A walking tour would be fun I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteI love old buildings like that, and you've captured a good shot. I have never been to Floyd, though I don't live too awfully far away. Looks like a great place to visit.
ReplyDeletelook at that well placed apostrophe.
ReplyDeletep.s.I also watch Duck Dynasty with a couple of teenaged boys (much more fun that way - their comments are priceless!)
ReplyDeleteI really like this one!
ReplyDeleteGreat sign, Looks like it has just been freshened up.
ReplyDeleteReally like that old-timey signage (and building)!
ReplyDeleteI always love seeing signs like this.
ReplyDeleteNice find!
ReplyDeleteThis building looks spic and span and the sign looks like it was painted yesterday. I don't know how much business there is for farmers supply and local hardware stores down there, but the owners are taking care of their property.
ReplyDeleteNeat picture!
ReplyDeleteI like the old school signage! New places don't have the same inviting look.
