Godwin Cemetery & Fincastle United Methodist Church

Fincastle . Botetourt County

The earliest graves date from the mid 1800's on land purchased by James Godwin for a family graveyard. A portion of his property was deeded to John Slicer in 1891 for his family burials.

The church is Fincastle United Methodist Church. The congregation was formed in 1789. The original building was condemned and torn down with the aid of Oxen teams and replaced with the building of this church in 1840.



I love, love, love this church! I've blogged about the church and the cemetery a few times...you can see those posts HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE and last but not least HERE....I need to make some time to get over there and take a walk...finally getting some warm weather by the weekend! Maybe I'll go then!

Willy Nilly Friday 5 No. 164 & A Theme Day!

I'm late for everything today!! So combining 3 things in 1!
1)
Breckenridge Elementary . Fincastle
City Daily Photo monthly Theme Day was on the 1st and I'm late to that...the theme this month was "Play"...last night the boys' basketball team played their last game...this was the hardest game we've played all season...the boys gave it their all and won! The score was 71-63! It was intense and at times didn't look like we'd win! They finished their season undefeated...have a tournament later in the month! So this is my take on "PLAY"...see more at City Daily Photo

2) We are under a weather advisory for high winds...started last night and will continue till tomorrow...gusts as high as 60 mph...school was cancelled for today...many people are without power...we are lucky as of right now! I did wake up though to find the neighbor's trampoline in our yard!

3) Speaking of the winds...last night when we were leaving the basketball game in Fincastle my radio would not turn on...it does this on occassion and usually resets itself after sitting for a little bit (it seems to be an issue in Fords)...so I pulled into the parking lot of THIS CHURCH ...not typically scary...we've been there before...but this time it was very dark out...no lights on anywhere...well we didn't think anything of it then Dalton got out of the car to change his shirt and he noticed the sky...it was flashing blue and red...we didn't know what was happening...it was windy but quiet...while we were watching the sky I then noticed the light in the parking lot flashing on and off...I just thought it was on a sensor or something and not working right...then the church lights inside starting turning on and off and then the old house across the road started flashing on and off too! I've shown you that house RIGHT HERE...I thought they meant the abandoned house next door was turning on and off which I've shown you that house RIGHT HERE ...as we were driving through the old portion of Fincastle that is full of old houses, old churches and old graveyards...lights were flickering on and off! When we made it out to the main road we saw lots of emergency vehicles with their lights on heading somewhere...once we got home we heard that some transformers exploded leaving many without power..still today! 4) Today I am thankful for the fact that we haven't lost power!! Thousands are without power right now and I feel so thankful that we are not one of them!! You can read that story HERE and I'm linking that with Michelle's Thankful Thursday

Abandoned Farm

These pictures were taken last month along Bethel Road in Fincastle...

Driving along Bethel Road we noticed this abandoned farm so we parked and got out to walk around...we had to cross a little bridge and there was a "No Trespassing" sign which made me nervous but there was nobody around and obviously nobody lives here...we weren't too intrusive, just took some pictures from a distance...this yellow bench seems like a strange fit with the falling down house...but I thought it was neat!


Not really sure what this structure is/was...do you have any ideas?


Anyone need to use the bathroom? ;)

This is the old Fincastle jail built in 1897...I've shown it to you a few times, you can get a closer look HERE ...Fincastle is one of my favorite towns in Botetourt...I've mentioned that a time or 2 :)

Live Nativity @ Camp Eagle

Last night we went and saw the Live Nativity in Fincastle...It was really neat...when we lived in Georgia there was an awesome one we'd go to each year and this was the first one we've seen since...they did a great job! It was pretty cold, I think in the 30's but at least it wasn't windy or rainy! When you arrive you are put into groups then wait for your group to be called, we were group 14...when they called us we loaded a bus which took us to the starting point of the nativity...there we entered the pavilion and were served hot chocolate and cookies and entertained while we waited again for our group to be called...there were these dapper guys performing and we also saw the church choir. This was the only picture I took...planned to take some from the nativity scenes but once we started I was told no flash and it was just too dark for me to mess with my camera so I know ahead now for next time! The old jail was built in 1897...I've shown it to you a time or 2 before...maybe it looks familiar? ;)

Took this photo on Saturday when Ashlyn and I had to visit the Elections Office to get all our paperwork signed for our duties on Election Day. I wanted to walk around and snap some pictures because it was a pretty morning but Ashlyn just wanted to go home and go back to bed! She won.

InSPIREd Sunday - A Church In Fincastle

Do you ever take a picture, think you remember the name or where it is or think you captured a photo of the name, only to get home, get ready to post, then..."wah-wah" ...no name, no recollection, nada...nothing...zilch...that's what happend here. Location, Fincastle, up to the tippy top of Main Street. When you have the option to turn left for CAMS (Central Academy Middle School) which I normally do...you go straight. Willy Nilly Friday 5 No. 20 - Old Timey

Along Brugh's Mill Rd, Fincastle

A funny story about this photo. This was taken a little bit after leaving the market yesterday. The boys like the Root Beer they sell there so they each got one. They come in a plastic bottle that the lid screws on and off. So, Dalton is riding shotgun. I stop in the middle of the road to snap this shot really quick, telling the boys to be on the lookout for oncoming vehicles. Then we hear a sizzling type noise coming from the front passenger side. It gets loud, kind of quiets, then starts again...just sounds like a sizzle...sssssss...I'm getting worried thinking "what the heck is that noise?" ...Dalton thinks it's coming from the airbag so I tell him he better move into the back seat, maybe the airbag is about to explode or something. I'm driving slowly trying to figure out where the sound is...all the while looking for a place to pull over thinking I should probably call Nick, I'm not sure if I should be driving with this strange noise...all of a sudden Braden yells "Dalton, you idiot, it's your root beer bottle, the lid isn't on tight"....oh Dalton and I start cracking up, and boy, was I relieved that it wasn't something major with my car or that I didn't call Nick to come get us lol

So now for Willy Nilly's:

1) Ginny asked yesterday about the name Brugh's Mill and if there was an actual mill. Yes, there was but I think it is no longer around from my little bit of research. I found THIS interesting reading on the Brugh family, their tavern and mill. I also posted some info and a picture of the tavern before HERE

2) My dentist appt went well, except for the fact that I need some fillings done. But on the bright side, I really liked the people there...very nice...and it's super convenient to home! Ginny asked how I found my dentist and what happened with the old one. Well, I had been going to my old dentist here because he was referred to me through sports. He's local and I knew him and as a person and dentist I liked him. His office personnel not so much but I didn't worry about it until last week calling them to see when my cleanings were scheduled for this month and the woman at the desk told me she cancelled them because she had called to confirm and I never called her back, and again I got to deal with her "pleasant" attitude...so I told her that as much as I like Dr. So-and-so I didn't care for her rudeness and will not be coming back. I then just called this other dentist that is really close to home and the woman who schedules appointments and answers the phones was SO NICE and got Nick, Braden, Dalton and myself in for our cleanings all within 2 weeks. So Nick and I have had ours and the boys go next week. Ash and Christian had already went to Dr. So-and-so, but they'll have their next cleanings at the new dentist...

3) In honor of Veteran's Day this past Tuesday HERE are some war dogs...and A&E is coming out with this show Dogs Of War ...looks like a great show for a great cause.

4) A while back miss Busy Bee Suz posted about Vanilla Ice and I have been meaning to bring up this show Vanilla Ice Goes Amish ...it's really pretty good!

Yup, $2.55...then I saw Ashlyn's boyfriend there too..and he told me he had just seen Christian ha, small town living...

Today I have my dentist appointment at my new dentist. It's just a cleaning, but still, blah!

Happy Veteran's Day!
And now I want to take a second to appreciate my boys Braden and Dalton. In the U.S. you know how the Veterans pass out poppies for Veteran's Day...well, it was over the weekend and the Veterans were set up at Kroger. I gave the boys a few bucks to run in and get the couple of items I needed while I was waiting in the car. I watch them come out and go to the table set up by the Veterans. I watch with pride as they hand the money they have leftover to the elderly gentleman and in return get their poppies. This is something I have done every year. You know, our children really are sponges and pick up on these things when we don't really think they are even paying attention...well, they really are.

This is the house the artist in yesterday's post was painting. Circa 1873, known as Academy Hill or Bolton's Hill. I found this old newstory from back in 2009 showing the rennovation... CLICK HERE for the story and pictures

This barn sits right down the road from Academy Hill. Notice the clothes on the line? That's what drew my attention!

Monday Murals - Open Studios Tour

A couple of weeks ago we went on the Open Studios Tour around Botetourt. One of our stops was the studio space of Ed Bordett which is housed inside of this 1930's dealership building:

This is an historical home not too far from his studio. I will show you what the old house looks like tomorrow.

Heriatge Family Market . 36 Botetourt Road . Fincastle

This market is amazing and has only been open a little less than a year. They have a great deli and the sandwiches are so delish, so fresh! Much of the inventory is from Amish suppliers and also local goodies as well, like local farm fresh eggs!

The 2 owners came to Fincastle to start a Mennonite congregation and opened the market as a way to earn a living while building their ministry. I think they are already a huge success! Linking with Signs, Signs

SkyWatch Friday and Random 5

Blacksburg Rd, Fincastle. I snapped this yesterday morning. Had to pick up Ashlyn in Buchanan. We both have had car troubles this week. Not fun. Mine is all better now...hers has to go back to the dealership again today. She has my car, I have Nick's car and he's going to drive a car off his lot. Musical cars today!

1) I'm sad that Nancy stopped blogging even though she told us not to be sad ;) I wonder how many of us will continue with the Random 5's she started?

2) Today @ 1:30 I will be on spring break! Today @ 3:30 the boys will all be on spring break!

3) Nick was out of town for a few days. Got caught up on movies he won't watch. I found the movie Adore on Netflix. I really liked it. These 2 women have been BEST friends since they were kids. Then they both go and fall in love with each others teenage boys. Although that sounds taboo it was really interesting to see how their friendship never falters and the side effects of their relationships with the boys. Here's the trailer for you:


4) I also watched 12 Years A Slave and August: Osage County. I hadn't finished 12 Years when I rented it a couple of weeks ago but Sunday I watched both of these back to back. Talk about intense. I was wiped out after all that. I should have followed 12 Years with a comedy ;)

5) I made talapia foil packets last night for dinner. Slice some lemons. Place your talapia on top, add a couple of pats of butter, sprinkle with sea salt and pepper then wrap and stick in oven, 350 for about 20 minutes. So tasty and easy peasy!
