New Bethel Church of the Brethren

Bethel Road . Fincastle . Botetourt County

I think this was built in 1927 because that is the only bit of info I can find...I tried and tried and not a thing more could I find...so frustrating! I did see a tiny bit on the Google Book site just a brief line or two stating that it was originally known as The Old Valley Congregation and something about a fire in 1907 but I don't know if it was referring to this church or not because I have to buy the book to find out so....if anyone knows go ahead and speak up!

Linking with Tom's Tuesday's Treasures

A little snow is in our forecast for tonight and tomorrow morning...they went from saying a dusting-3 inches to now just a coating...we'll see what happens!

  1. ...finding history of small country churches can be difficult. This old church no doubt rocks with music and amens. Thanks Tanya for stopping by, please come again.

  2. It is very interesting. You don't usually see stars on church doors. What a sad little cemetery, were these the only markers?

  3. From looking at articles online, they're along the same lines as the Quakers, but a different denomination. It looks quite old fashioned.

  4. Definitely a treasure of a find -- with or without all of the history. The star sort of looks like the metal kind you see all the time on Texas ranches and fences and stuff though, instead of the kind you'd see on a Church.

  5. I haven't heard of the Church of the Brethren for a long time. It is a conservative Protestant group that evolved out of the Pietist movement which started in Germany in the 17th century, I believe. This is a rather nice old church and looks to be in pretty good shape.

  6. We have several churches like this in my area. Been around for so long, but no info. Always interesting, though. We received about 3 inches of snow last night/this morning. I spent some time shoveling. Never can tell in my area with the weather.

  7. What a sweet little church! Have you been to the Crossroads Brethren Mennonite Heritage Center in Harrisonburg?

  10. Simplicity works so well on this little church. Nicely captured. I hate it when I can't find any information on a place like this!
