Battle of Buchanan I

The cannon is fired at Union Troops as General Lee watches. Here's how it went down:

"Confederate General McCausland and his confederate troops fighting to delay Union General Hunters fiery Raid of the Valley. As Hunter’s troops ford the river upstream, McCausland troops hold their ground. As the Buchanan Turnpike Bridge burns destroying approximately thirty homes and businesses, troops blast the mountainside blocking passage along the ridge road leading from Buchanan to Liberty."

  2. these re enactments are quite amazing, we've watched a show of medieval knights charging one another with spears as long as boats-hard to think that people actually lived all of this.

  4. One of the professors at VMI told me of a grave up on the mountain, it was a big secret as to it's location but he had seen it and wouldn't tell where it was. The reason for the secret was that it was marked by the cavalryman's sword that was stuck in the ground. It was still there 30 some years ago though very rusted and hard to see unless you knew where it was, he wouldn't tell me the location and I guess someone may know but it must still be a secret or we would know.

    2. There is no way of knowing but it was not easy to see from what he told me so who knows they may have even done something to hide it. That is some rough ground all through there and lots of it so I suspect it is there.

  7. Terrific photo, Tanya. I love the smoke and the flag fluttering slightly in the wind. General Lee certainly looks like himself in profile. Thanks for sharing it. Bonny

  11. I love this! I went to Fredericksburg 14 years ago but we must have missed the best part, it wasn't anywhere near as good as this! Hope you have more coming!

  13. Hopefully they didn't burn and destroy any bridges or homes this time.

  14. It's interesting how war can become part of the Zeitgeist and culture after so many years. I just did a post about an abandoned village, lost after the war in these regions. That's a really great image!

  15. I have seen a few reenactments; always enjoy watching them. The south is rich in Civil War trails, especially in the area that you live. The north has its interesting Cilil War places too,me.g. Gettysburg. My husband and I have discussed going there someday. I am hoping that day will be some day soon.

  19. There are no Civil War re-enactments in Connecticut, but I have marked my calendar for a Revolutionary War re-enactment later in the month.

  20. Cool picture! I've been to several of these events. I particularly like touring the "camps" before the battle and seeing the costumes.

  23. I like these reenactments as long as the people don't take themselves too too seriously! :)

  26. This is an excellent image, Tanya. Red cap and highlights on the foreground soldier, and red in the flag, and smoke obscuring the horseman in the background. All sorts of visual interest.
