Great Dismal Swamp

Great Dismal Swamp . Suffolk . VA

In April Nick and I took a little jaunt to The Great Dismal Swamp…our first stop was to the Wildlife Refuge/Lake Drummond where you can take an auto tour BUT as we rolled up to enter we noticed a fire and a firefighter blocking the entrance…turned out they had a controlled burn happening which they do once or twice a year…lucky us haha…oh well…there was other stuff to see…

I didn’t see any bears wearing masks but I kept my eyes peeled!

I kept thinking of the awful conditions the slaves had to work in 😞

Well even though we didn’t get to see the main part of our trip we still had a great time and I wouldn’t mind going again!

Today I’m thankful for great conversations with my boys when we can catch up on everything! We’ve been having crazy schedules lately so I haven’t really seen much of them but last night I was able to have fun talks with both of them which I really enjoyed!

Tuesday’s Treasures - Lauderdale

Lee Hwy . Buchanan

I drive past this big old house often, you can see it from the road. Recently I decided to try and find out the history on it which actually wasn’t hard for once! It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places…built in 1821, or even earlier.

It is said that it was much like Tara from Gone With The Wind with all the social galas that took place there.

I found a really interesting story about the history of the mansion in The Botetourt Bee which you can read HERE

SkyWatch Friday - The James River

The James River . Monroe . Va

A couple of weeks back we took a little scenic drive to Big Island…pretty scenery…this portion of the James is just a few miles down from the Otter Lake Dam in Monroe…

There were a lot of people out kayaking…if you zoom in on the rocks you can see a pair of kayakers found a great spot to hang out!

These views of the Blue Ridge Mountains are AHmazing!

If you zoom in again you can see a bunch of little people that look like ants enjoying the river! I took this from wayyyy up high!

Vinton History Museum

210 East Jackson Ave . Vinton

Yesterday Nick and I were going to Vinton for lunch at our favorite Mexican place and I suggested we stop and check out the history museum first since we haven’t ever been to it.  What a cute house it is in!  I could definitely live in this house!

The kitchen was my favorite room…

Look at all these old cameras:

These are the Uptons:

And this used to be their house.

Today I am thankful for this guy:

…actually every day I am thankful for him!! My Ozzy is getting up there in age, (some of you might even remember when we got him) so every day I get with him is a gift!

(This picture was taken a few hours ago…he was waiting for Ashlyn to come over!)

SkyWatch Friday-Fincastle

Botetourt County Courthouse . Fincastle

Today I had to run over to Fincastle to pick up my packet for Tuesday’s election which I’m working again! I’ve been helping with the elections since 2016! I do enjoy it though!

Roanoke Typewriter Sales Co.

321 Campbell Ave SE . Roanoke

Yep, permanently closed. I’m thankful that I grew up in a time when me and my friends all wanted typewriters for Christmas and could not wait until we could take typing class in Jr. High…things were just so much simpler then!
