The Pet Place

The Pet Place . 850 Roanoke Road . Daleville

I drive by this place daily. Our high school is just down the road and I grocery shop at the Kroger across the street. Our first house when we moved here was right down the gravel road next to the cemetery over there...I stopped here on Sunday to hide one of my painted rocks for a friend who works here to find. They always have such clever signs!

Today I am thankful for good people. Good people that come out of the woodwork in a tragedy, like Houston. I've been watching so many videos and newsclips of good people rescuing animals and those in trouble. People lined up on the freeway with their trucks hauling boats coming in to help out. Many nurses and firefighters from our area have left to go help out. Local businesses like Jack Browns, a burger/beer joint, are donating all profits from all 6 locations to the Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund...just so much good happening in light of these horrific events...for a list of ways you can help CLICK HERE

Limit 6 Trout Team

Saw this colorful truck along the Roanoke River this past spring...they must have been fishing! Anytime my oldest son has some free time you can find him on a river or lake fishing...he prefers Bass though.

Sorry I wasn't around Friday for Willy Nilly...Some unpleasant distractions came up and I hope we are done with that and it is smooth sailing for all involved here on out...

If you live in the Tx flooding area, I hope you are safe...just terrible what is happening :(

The Green Goat . 802 Wiley Dr SW . Roanoke . 24015

Today I am thankful for my husband. He takes great care of us and every decision he makes is based on what is better for our family...on the rare occasion that I have to be a "grown up" it makes me realize how much he does and how thankful I am for that!

Day Of The Big Eclipse

Did you have a good view of the eclipse yesterday? Our schools ordered glasses and passed them out to the students and faculty. School wasn't dismissed until after 4 so the kids could all watch the eclipse from school. I brought my glasses home and watched from the deck. I was so happy they thought of this! I remember seeing the one in 1979...I was in Jr. High and we used a piece of paper with a pin hole...these glasses were so much better! I wish I could have taken a picture like I saw it through my glasses but I don't have a special filter, nor do I know how haha...anyways, this is what it must have looked like with the naked eye...I had my glasses on and just pointed my camera in the general direction...such a photographer :) ...we had pretty good visibibility and then right at the time of totality a storm cloud covered it....oh well! I am happy that I saw what I got to see anyway :)

Michie Tavern . 683 Thomas Jefferson Parkway . Charlottesville . VA . 22902

1) Michie Tavern has a loooong and interesting history dating back to 1777! Read about it HERE

2) The boys have their first football game tonight! We play our rival school. There are 2 high schools in our county and it's a big deal when we play each other...everybody comes! Our school moved up a division and so our schedule this year does not include our rival so tonight they scheduled a "benefit game" kind of as an excuse to play them!

3) Trying so hard to get used to our school schedule and all the running around...I have been spread thin but hoping I get back in my groove.

4) Tomorrow Nick's employer is having a company party at the lake...that should be fun!

5)
Somewhere in Charlottesville....(that should cool you off a bit!)

That's my 5 this week friends! I hope you will join in too! Post 5 randoms, link back and visit others!! Have a super weekend and stay safe!

Today I am thankful for a few hours I got to spend with Ashlyn yesterday! She had to come over to do some laundry and asked me if I would go to an antique store with her because she is trying to find a table for her tv...doesn't take much to convince me to visit an antique store! We didn't find anything she liked but it was sure a nice afternoon :)

James Monroe's First Farm

McCormick Road . Charlottesville

"In 1788 James Monroe purchased an 800-acre farm here to be close to his friend Thomas Jefferson and to establish a law office. In 1799 the Monroes moved to their new Highland plantation adjacent to Monticello and sold the first farm. in 1817 the Board of Visitors of Central College purchased 43 3/4 acres of Monroe’s old farm, for the Lawn and the Ranges of the “academical village” that Jefferson was planning to build with private contributions. On 6 Oct. President Monroe, with former presidents Jefferson and Madison, laid the cornerstone for its first building, Pavilion VII. On 25 Jan, 1879, Central College was charged by the General Assembly as the University of Virginia."

This was taken this past spring while the boys were on spring break...we spent the day hiking around...doesn't seem possible that summer is coming to an end already!

Mauser's Tater House

Back in March we took a little road trip down to North Carolina to see the Bunker Hill Covered Bridge and this cute little place sits at the entrance of park where the bridge is...I had to go investigate....

Armed with this bit of info "Mauser's Tater House" I was sure I'd find loads and loads of info on it when I got home....but we know how that story goes...nothing but this:
"Home, Sweet ‘Potato’, Home - Tater pad gets new use

NEWTON, NC
The Mauser Tater House that was used for many decades to cure and store sweet potatoes is now going to have a very different use — a historical learning tool located at Bunker Hill Cover Bridge.

To read more of this story, pick up the Tuesday print edition of Catawba County's community newspaper, The Observer News Enterprise, at newsstands throughout the county."

Not having the print edition of the Catawba County newspaper I have no idea what the rest of the story is...but I did find this picture of the tater house travelling down the road from the same story above:

I know you are sitting on the edge of your seats wanting more but that's all I have for ya! Linking up with Tom's Tuesday's Treausers

School starts tomorrow :( so sad that our summer is over...have to take the boys in for haircuts today, I'm getting one too! Happy Tuesday!

Willy Nilly Friday 5 No. 138

1)
This morning's sunrise...the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance...it's going to be a gorgeous day!

2)
Wednesday was Ashlyn's 23rd birthday! I went over and picked her up so we could spend a few hours together. She wanted to go to Black Dog Salvage and look around for a table...everything was way out of her price range...they have cool stuff there, just pretty costly...I've heard from people around here that the prices went up after they started their show...that's too bad...anyways, after leaving Black Dog empty handed I took her to lunch at Tuco's Taqueria which is one of her favorite places...we both had a shredded beef taco and a chicken taco...oh, and a margarita :)
After that we went back to her apartment and walked around the block with Riley...

3)
This one is a couple of houses down from her...

4)
This one is on the corner...can you see the porch curtains on the left? I love when big porches like this have curtains!

5)
The little alleyway that runs behind her street...

I've got to get the boys up shortly and head to the mall...we need to do some back to school shopping...boo...school starts Wednesday...booooo :(

I put shopping off till almost the last minute and wouldn't you know, today and tomorrow are "tax free" days for back to school stuff such as clothes and computers and school supplies...you couldn't pay me to get out and shop tomorrow but maybe the crowds won't be so bad this morning and I can save a few bucks!

That's my 5 this week friends! I hope you will play along too! Post 5 randoms, link back and visit others! Have a great weekend :)
