Monday Murals - Interlocking Tower

Old interlocking tower in Lynchburg, built in 1924:

"In 1924, C&O Ry built a two story, brick interlocking tower in Lynchburg, Virginia beside the diamond of the N&W Ry crossing. The N&W double tracked "Old Mainline" tracks were from Island yard and points east, and to Union Station and points west in the opposite direction. The C&O tracks were from Richmond to the east and Clifton Forge to the west. The 1924 brick structure replaced an old wood building, also constructed by the C&O. To both railroads, it was known as ND cabin/tower. The Southern Railway also passed nearby but it crossed the N&W a few hundred yards to the west at "X" tower and for several decades all three railroads had passenger trains using Union Station, as well as streetcars of the Lynchburg Traction & Light Company. Both ND and NC towers were replaced about 1950 by the one story "NC" tower which was located across the N&W tracks, in front of Union Station. NC controlled movements on the nearby tracks of N&W, C&O and Southern Railways.

Having an original diagram book for railroad signs published by the C&O, I was able to make an accurate replica of the ND sign which was attached to the side of the brick building. Originally, there were two signs on either side of the southwest corner, at second floor level. On the eastern side, hung a sign, "N&W Crossing" which lasted into the 21st century!
The replica sign was finished and hung March 19, 2009. The picture of ND Cabin was made in February 2009."

Found that interesting history and a photo of the building before it was "tagged" HERE. Lots of great railroad histories on that blog!

Monday Mural - Rooftop Graffiti

This graffiti is found on the roof of Center in the Square. I wonder why, after all the work they did, they didn't clean up the graffiti? Odd!

Anyways, the weekend's weather was awesome. Yesterday we decided to head downtown and check out the views from atop Center in the Square. Pretty amazing! Had lunch at Queso Southwestern Grill inside the City Market Building. I suggest the shredded beef taco and steak burrito, yum.

Today is a snow day. The snow is falling quick. Not sticking to the roads yet but we have about an inch or so in the yard so far. Guess it's supposed to snow all day with the possibility of 4-8 inches. The Governor has already declared a State of Emergency. Maybe this will be bigger than they think!

Oscars?! Stayed up to watch. Loved Ellen! The only movie I have seen so far was Captain Phillips which was really good. Nick had seen Wolf of Wall Street which he LOVED and has gone on and on about it ever since. I loved that Lupita Nyong'o from 12 Years A Slave. I must see that movie. I loved Matthew McConaughey's speech. Pink...WOW...Angelina Jolie walking out with Sidney Poitier, I love her. And when Ellen bought pizza, she is hilarious! Well, that's my Oscars wrap up ha! ABC Wednesday - E*&*%$ What?

Found on an old pump house along the Percival's Island trail in Lynchburg.

As I sit here getting this post ready for Wednesday (it's Tuesday evening) they are calling for snow tomorrow, lots and lots of snow. (E)pic amounts of snow (see what I did there? I used the letter E again ;) !) We may get 10+ inches. Supposed to start tomorrow (Wed) afternoon and continue through till Thursday. I'm pretty excited. We all are! We haven't had snow like this since we first moved here a few years ago. It tricked us. I thought all winters were like that. NOT...sooo...we are anxiously awaiting to see what happens. School has already decided to dismiss 2 hours early. I've got a few goodies to pick up at Kroger so we can be fat and happy and snowed in. We just had some more wood delivered in case we lose power...cross those fingers that we don't! I'll keep you abreast of the situation as it unfolds!

Linking with ABC Wednesday for the letter E! :)

Monday Murals - Lynchburg

Yeah so it's not exactly a mural per se, but it is a positive kind of message. My boys love basketball so this caught my attention. Painted on the old Piedmont Flour Mill in Lynchburg.
