Signs, Signs & A Good Fence @ Sparks Cemetery

Yesterday was so nice out so the boys wanted to I wanted to go to the Booker T Washington National Park and walk the trails. We picked up some sandwiches and picnicked outside the park then started on the Jack-O-Lantern trail:
Click Here for interesting info on the trail and how it got its name.

Towards the end of this trail, coming up the ridge I saw this:
I have never seen this little cemetery before so I had to investigate!

This little marker was the only one I could barely make out:
The only words I can see are "Sid Dide August 1823"...I think...

I was going to ask about the cemetery in the park's visitor's center but they were busy with a large group so I just came home and Googled it. Little is known about the cemetery, but oral tradition has it to be "Sparks" and perhaps having been a slave cemetery. It was in use before the Burroughs purchased the property in the mid-nineteenth century.

I've shown you around Booker T before HERE

  1. What a great find along your walk in the woods. What a great time of year to be going for a walk. Nothing like spring.

  5. Part of the stone's left side seems worn away as under Dided is Ths 3Yr some number of mths (months) and 3 years old if I can see it right. So there may also be more to the left of SID or not, hard to tell without knowing a little more about who it might be. We have a similar cemetery at our c. 1800 house and I figured it out once I researched who might have been here based on court house records.

  7. Looks like a great walk, full of history. And your sons are lucky to have a mom who will take them where they want to go (or is it the other way round ;>)? Either way, seriously, they are lucky to get to do things like this with you.

  13. Looks like a very nice place for a spring hike. The old cemetery has a nice rustic fence. I always feel sad though when graves seem so neglected like that.

  20. The stone is very interesting, I imagine it took someone a lot of time to carve those letters.
